Hi, everyone, we have a system software updates for PS3 coming soon, and I wanted to provide you with a sneak peak at the details.

The PS3 firmware update (v2.60) is designed primarily to enhance the system’s media capabilities. The key feature is a new Photo Gallery application, which delivers a suite of tools for sorting through and displaying your digital photo collection. Digital pictures can be organized in groups according to various criteria, including the camera used to take the photos, the event date and time, colors in the photos, as well as the number, ages, or facial expressions of the people pictured. You can also create slideshows set to music and build photo playlists with an easy-to-use interface. The Photo Gallery application will need to be installed separately from the XMB after you update your PS3’s firmware. To install the Photo Gallery application, go to the Photo section on the XMB, select Photo Gallery and press the X button.

The 2.60 update also includes:

* Guest access to PlayStation Store – This enables non-PlayStation Network members to browse through the storefront to check out the latest games, demos, videos, etc.
* DivX 3.11 support – Videos in this format can now be played on PS3.

Is it me or does it look like it uses facial recognition to search for old/ young people or smiley non smiley peeps?

At present older versions of Divx are not supported by the PS3, this means that older dvd rips and recordings don't play. Divx 3.11 is a much older Divx version (we're currently on 7 iirc), so its introduction should mean that more older files will play on the PS3 with 2.6

I doubt they'll ever support MKV, as MKV isn't a specific codec like Divx. It's whats called a container, in which all manner of video and audio codecs could be used. In order for the PS3 to support MKV, Sony would have to create support for all of these codecs. At present they support enough to allow for specific types of high definition content to be played which is pretty good imo.

Yea its good that VOB works, just MKV support would be very handy for obvious reasons.

There are some more details emerging about tomorrows PS3 Firmware Update.

According to our source, on top of the already announced Photo Gallery feature, and Divx 3.11 support, here are some more of the expected feaures of FW 2.60:

* Safe Mode
* Blu-Ray Disc Theme Support
* HDD Data can be accessed and deleted in-game
* 3-D Secure Support
* Improved System Stabilty

We are not exactly sure what these features offer, especially the Blu-Ray Disc Theme Support, and the Safe Mode, but we are looking forward to finding out.

3.11 aka "the good 'ol days"
 
I would like:

Clock / battery indicator reposition option;
Ability to disable status notification without having to back out to the full XMB;
Ability to sort friends into categories;
In game XMB voice chat;
Improvement in Browser performance when playing videos would be nice too;
Improvement in XMB responsiveness.
 
Only thing i really really want is cross game voice chat via the XMB, everything else is bearable as it is. Though i do agree quicker response times and a repositioning of the clock would be nice.

You're never gonna get it, go and buy an Xbox 360 already. :p

Anyone know when they are going to add more content to Home?
