Hi,

My brother wants to buy a PS3, and he want ths one that is compatible with the PS2/1 (60Gb version?). I've tried to find one for him but there doesn't seem to be one available in most of the regular eshops I use.

Does anyone know anyone stocking these?

Also my brother mentioned that you can get an emulator for the PS3 40GB version, but as I know nothing about PS3's I don't know if this is a dongle, or re-chip or if it's software emulation, can anyone shed any light on this for me?

Thanks

Taff

iirc the european ps3s have software emulation anyway
everywhere else got the chip but it was cheaper to use emulation for sony, and they have realised that the emulation is better than the chip so are only doing software emulated ps3s now (feel free anyone to correct me if im wrong!)

I have a UK ps3 60gb, and they have the emulation rather than the backwards compatibility chip
my brother too wants a 60gb ps3, but they are out of stock everywhere. i too would like to know whats going on:)

I don't think there is a PS2 emulator for the 40GB version, neither inbuilt or one that can be added later on. It is worth noting that the 40GB PS3 can still play PS1 games, just not their PS2 counterparts. As for availability, Sony should be bringing more in before the Christmas rush starts picking up the pace. Try some high street shops, they should have some still.

Partly, the CPU aspect is emulated, but the 60GB PS3s still have the PS2 graphics chip - the 40GB doesn't.

I just looked online for 60GB PS3s, they are selling for 600+ in the shops I've looked

theres a real shortage of them

the typical highstreet game / dvd / cd retailers dont seem to have any in. 40gb PS3s are as rare as Wiis at the moment

except for the poor old 360, which they seem to be unable to give away at the moment. Thats probably more a reflection on their stock levels rather than popularity but nvm.

The original US/JAP PS3s had the PS2 Emotion Engine and Graphics Synthesisor in one chip.

The 60GB UK PS3s had only the PS2 Graphics Synthesisor, with the EE being emulated in software. Cheaper yes, but not as compatible as having both the EE+GS in silicon.

Now, the 40GB PS3s have had the GS removed, so there is no backwards compatiblity at all.

60Gb PS3s have been discountiued with only the 40Gb avalible right now. I think Sony are releasing an 80Gb version that will be full fat, but that will be due in 2008.

No if anything its more ferior as theyre about £500 on the bay! The 80Gb ones are exactly the same iirc just 20gb more space (which is pretty pointless!) I think Sony thought it would be best to release a cheaper alternative closer to christmas so more people can afford to buy one (hense shortage of 40Gbs.) Then they will release the expensive one again later in the year when its more appropiate/or cheaper to produce (or can con people into thinking the larger harddrive can mean its suitable to keep the same price!)

hmmm maybe I should ebay off my ps3 then buy it again when they are back in stock!
Amd the 20gb hard drive increase SURELY is more trouble for sont than its worth?!

so my 60gb one is inferior now?? is the new one just going to have the bigger hard drive?
sony really are messing about witht he ps3

I wouldn't say it's inferior just because it has 20Gig less HDD space - everything else will be the same.

Sony were originally planning on going to full software emulation for PS2 games, but really struggled to get the cell to emulate the PS2 Gfx chip due to the bandwidth etc.

That's exactly what I was thinking! I don't really have need for backwards compat, SACD or 2 extra USB ports. :D

Of course the moral of this story is not to buy ANYTHING in December when you have had most of the year to do so.

Every year we have a rush on whats the latest gadget or gizmo and every year people complain they cant buy it in December....you would think people would learn by now.

Hmmm, so what does this tell us then?....that the Cell chip is actually rather crap and no where near as powerful as the hype, because it cant handle an 8yr old processor.

I got mine in a package with genji and motorstorm. Tried to sell genji on ebay but not a sniff. Really must be a terrible game.

Genji aint amazingly bad it was just one of the v. first ps3 games and you can get it for under a fiver new jap retail !
