PS3 80gb Backwardly Compatible???

Component is your best bet i'm afraid. There is a VGA cable you can get iirc though i've never had any experience with it so can't really give you any info on its performance.

The only PS2 VGA cable I can think of is the one which came with the linux kit, and that unfortunately did not work with games. :(

Why are people so bothered about backward compatibility?

Because some of the greatest games ever came out on the PS2 and my launch-day PS2 is most likely on its last legs. I did think it died last year but it managed to somehow repair itself.

Yes, yes, i know i could buy a slim-PS2 but i get some form of sick pleasure from not knowing whether my PS2 will boot every time i switch it on. And yes, yes when it does die i will just buy a Slim PS2, but it would be nice to just have it all in one box and not know that at some point i will have to fork out £50 just to play games i already own.

Maybe I am missing out some brilliant games, but I don't remember many great games on it. Now I do however remember many countless hours on PS1 games. Hence why I am happy about the 80Gb playing my old PS1 games.

I think the only games I want to play is MGS2/3.

Hardware doesn't last forever, and eventually it'll get harder and harder to get replacements and parts for them.

I don't want to get to a point where I can't play certain games because the hardware isn't available anymore.

As far as I'm concerened, full backwards compatability is a must have now for any future console.

FFX, god of war 1+2, okami, odin sphere, ico, shadow of the colossus and zone of the enders 2 would all be games that either equal or better what the current generation of consoles offer imo.

Got a 80GB PS3 today and wanted to try out Final Fantasy VIII on it but it doesn't work. It loads up the PS1 logo and then goes to a black screen. It does this on all 4 discs.
Anyone else get this problem.

I thought all PS1 games were compatible with the PS3.

Most do.

I've heard of many people with problems with FF8 though. :(

Sadly you've started with the one title i've found that doesn't work on most PS3s. Never found another PS1 game that doesn't work though if that makes you feel better.

Thanks. Just found out it's only the versions with the code 'SLES-02080' that don't work. All others work fine.

Unfortunately this is the only PS1 game that i've got left. Will try and pick up a second hand copy of a different version somewhere.
