PS3 AA Sucks!

I've found that every console game, bar none, suffers from aliasing but I just get on with it and don't really care anymore. I don't game much on a PC anymore so it becomes less and less of an issue. Playing without my glasses on also helps. ;)

Killzone 2 at 1980x1080 with 2xQAA says hi. Seriously the best looking console game I've seen. I was hard pressed to find any jaggies whatsoever! A fair bit on 720p, but it's a whole new ball game on 1080i (the game is actually 1920x1080i native, not 720p, try it by unchecking 720p in display options) and totally dispels any myth that the PS3 can't do AA.

Agreed. Also very encouraging to know that Sony had made sure that guerilla games documented all their findings when developing for the PS3. Apparently in the future many games will use the same/modified versions of the KZ2 engine.

So Killzone 2 looks better at 1080i? Hmm I'll have to try that, can I just have my PS3 set to use 720P + 1080i or do I have to uncheck 720?

Bit annoying if the latter, don't really wanna have to keep changing back and forth as most games will default to 480/576.

Nah just tick 720P and 1080i, when a game doesn't want to run at 1080i (most of em) it'll just default back to 720p. Wipeout HD will also benefit from this.

Yeah, you have to untick 720p. It is fairly annoying as I wish the game simply would have an option ingame to default to 1080i instead. Well worth it though. The difference is pretty big. The little things like railings, chainlink fences and ariels/ropes look so much better.

I was under the impression that when more than one resolution is selected the game will run at the best one possible? (see above for what i thought basically)

The only time i've seen people unticking 720p is to force the PS3 to upscale a very small minority of games.

The PS3 always prefers 720p over 1080i I think (for games at least), which is different to how the Xbox 360 sees things. If you have Killzone 2, it's worth having a small look.

That's just mental tbh, well in need of a firmware update. Why the hell does hardware prefer to DOWNSCALE a game? Jesus, the console is putting the effort in to render the bloomin' thing at 1080i so why not show it if it can?

Meh, bit dramatic, but it does make no sense.

I do have Killzone, but lack a 1080i television, my parents own one though and i had 1080i and 720p ticked. I assumed it was rendering it at 1080 and it did look awesome but i think that could be more to do with the difference between a £800 tele and a £400 tele

It is worth noting that 1080p games will display in 1080p of course, it's just that the bods at Sony has the view that 720p is more preferable than 1080i - which is fair enough. Quite a few guys think the same.

Ahh, that is a very good point. I forget that 'p' is better than 'i' in many cases. If i'm honest i don't have a clue what the difference is other than one is progressive and one is interlaced... whatever that means.

I was playing RES5 on the PS3 over at my brothers, and he was complaining about the AA and blurry textures, I thought it looked pretty decent, but then seeing it on his Sons 360, I can see why, blimey, the difference is quite stark at times, the level of detail lost in the QAA or whatever they are using is quite poor IMO.

This generation more then any other IMO almost forces you to buy both consoles to really enjoy everything..

Testicles, you don't need AA to enjoy a game. The darkness ran terribly on the PS3 in comparison to the 360 and i still thoroughly enjoyed it. The differences between RE5 on both platforms are negligible (hence why you haven't seen the usual fanboy war over this game; the differences are so small not even they can bother). Was he using component with his 360? Being a analogue signal that naturally smooths images, i've seen both versions connected via HDMI, albeit to different televisions, but there was barely anything in it at all.

Barely anything in that video either, even the notorious gametrailers fanboys have little to say.

Where as I agree about the fanboys over scrutinising, usually with noses pressed up to their 32" LCD's.. this was on a 1080p projector, both via HDMI.. blown up to 120" (sat 8-9 feet away)

He doesn't normally complain, as to be honest you can't be too fussy when you blow the image up so much However, some games just look quite poor, and RES5 is one of those.. as I said, I thought it looked OK, and could quite happily play it, however, when he put the 360 version on, I suddenly saw what he meant, all the fine detail (e.g. trees in the background) just leapt out on the 360, and it looked markedly better.. Putting the PS3 version back in and just playing for 10 mins and it was obvious there is something weird going on, the detail and AA seem very inconsistent, you can be walking along and suddenly all the background objects suddenly show loads of AA artefacts, then the next second it's OK again.. a very odd behaviour that is quite off putting on a large screen.

Once you eat steak you don't go back to mcdonalds! lol

It's like using a high resolution now, would you be happy to go back to 800x600 for your games? If you would then fair play but a lot wouldn't.

Well, i went from dead space on my PC to dead space on the PS3. Enjoyed it more on the console despite the lower resolution, less AA, lower texture quality etc etc.

If i had a 360 i'd have got The Darkness on it yeah, but the thing i was arguing against is that you need the best looking version to gain enjoyment from the game which simply isn't true. Either version of the Darkness was still a great game, one just looked crap compared to the other.

Been playing a few games on PC lately at 1920x1200, now I find myself playing a PS2 at god knows what low res it's using but I have it at 576i, anyway who cares? Persona 4 on PS2 has gripped me more than any PC game has since Team Fortress 2 came out.
