PS3 and 1080p.

jesus what does it matter:o the point is, its lower than 720p. thats what i said!
But again, that hasnt been confirmed. Its all speculation.
It might well run at below 720p, it might run at 720p, it might even run above 720p. We just dont know. The effects in the game used for smoothing makes it even more difficult to judge.
Plus, if it doesnt matter, why are you continuing. ;) :p.

are you being argumentative for the sake of it? irrational. the post precessing effects on the ps3 very affect everything smoothing over textures and such but what they dont do is cover up the resolution the game is being rendered at. look at all the photos and you'll see it. it doesnt run at the same resolution or above the 360 version at all. again, look at the photos.

oh, and you know exactly what i meant - it doesnt matter what its rendered at, the point was it was lower than 720p. i never claimed it WAS 640p. but it looks far closer to that than anything else. That's why it's 'believable'. please read my posts.

again, if you want games rendered at 1080p, you arent going to get it. not this generation.

no it literally is just the resolutions the ps3 will output while playing that game. if a game says 1080p on the box, it just means the ps3 will scale whatever the game rendered to 1080p. since the scale is software controlled, it varies from game to game. however most that dont say 1080p will still do it, but the scaling the ps3 uses for games doesnt appear to be very good. i prefer all mine in 720p and letting the tv do the rest.

Aren't GT5, Ridge Racer 7 and Wipeout HD rendered at 1080p?

no, yes and yes...i think. but RR7 isnt the most detailed of games and never are the wipeout series traditionally. they wouldnt put anywhere near as much load on the console as games like gt5:) there are exceptions of course, but i meant games in general. consoels thsi generation arent and really wont be 1080p focused.

True enough, however I think it's a little unfair to totally dismiss the games running in 1080p, when I first got the PS3 I played RR7 on an SD TV and though it looked about as goos as an Xbox (not 360) game, however in 1080p it looks stunning, even though as you say it isn't about the detail.

Games trying for a bit more realism won't be 1080p because the hardware simply isn't powerful enough.

Which isn't strange as the percentage of 720p LCD is much higher than 1080p LCD's

i dont know, i feel thats a little irrelevant. bluray movies are all 1080p even if the displays out there arent. you could aregue that bluray is looking to the future, but then thats what sony were supposed to be doing when they announced the intended lifespan of the ps3. the reality we got is games being somewhat south of even 720p, as kreeeee said.

I first stumbled across this problem with COD4. I remember putting it on and thinking WTF when I saw the pixelated gfx.
Like you've said OP, had to untick everything except for 1080P. Not sure if this has been patched though.

I think the only reason the PS3 is 1080p is because of Blu Ray and not because of the games.

But what does it matter anyway, i'd rather have a great game like GTA IV running (below) 720p than a crap game running 1080p

And maybe later on the developers get more used to programming on the PS3 so that they can make good games running 1080p, the same as they made brilliant games on the PS2 near it's end compared to early games.

The thing about unticking everything apart from 1080p is that some games and DVDs cant upscale to that resolution. So they automatically get defaulted to the res below, which will be SD (576i or summat), resulting in the game actually looking a lot worse off. Some DVDs even fail to play at all and my screen goes into standby mode.

The only games Ive heard of that benefit from the res work around is COD4 & GTA4.

Im using an hdmi cable with my ps3 on a 720p samsung and i have set it to 720p and have unticked all the others but it wont let me untick the 576p box is that normal?

Although strictly speaking there isn't such a thing.

768p:)

I've often wondered why games aren't rendered at 768p?

Video signals broadcast in 1080 will be scaled to 1366x768 which will look better than on a 720p (which only has 1280x720). More pixels is better.

1366x768 is NOT 720.
1280x720 IS 720
1920x1080 is 1080

Note the ratios, however:
1366/768=1.7786~1.78
1280/720=1.7778~1.78
1920/1080=1.7778~1.78
In each case, the aspect ratio is about 1.78:1 (the width is 1.78 times the height).

The reason for the 1366x768 resolution is to make full use of some memory chips which are scaled by 1MB (1024 addressing). 1366*768=1049088 which is slightly less than 1024*1024=1048576. They make the panel for about that many pixels with the 16:9 aspect ratio (which is 1.78:1).

Again I will say this, since you have switched off ALL resolutions apart from 1080p, any game which doesn't support PS3 upscaling to 1080p will revert to a lower resolution.

It's not like Xbox 360 games where you can scale any game to 1080p with the 360 hardware, PS3 games only support scaling to 1080p with the PS3 hardware if it says so on the box.

A quick google seems to suggest that Burnout doesn't support PS3 upscaling to 1080p.

It doesn't, I tried to do it once to see if the PS3 scaler is better than my 40W2000 but it reverts back to 576p

Before that I tried it with Uncharted to see if it made a difference but I could not see a difference so now I just have 576p, 720p and 1080p ticked (not 1080i) and let the PS3 decide what res to use.

Lol.
And you ask me if im being argumentative. :p. lol.

Its still speculation what it runs at.
Again, the smoothing effects/blury effect on the PS3 version hides the jaggies quite well for the most part. So its hard to tell.

Bottom line: Game is advertised as 1080p compatible. Wether thats native or wether thats scaled i dont care. If its advertised as, then it must be able to do so without work arounds. Simple as.
