Hello All.

Got a PS3 today and hooked it upto my Samsung 37" LE37R87BDX/XEU. Blu-ray content looks really sharpe and stunning.

But normal DVD's look somewhat a little pixelated (not much but a bit if i really look).

Is there anyway i can correct this? Any settings on the PS3 that i should change to improve quality?

TV is 720p/1080i
Player is PS3 (which upscales normal DVD's)

Thank You

thats how they are supposed to look - changing anything will make them look worse

Ohh it must be normal then.
Sorry had to ask, im new to all this HD stuff so just learning the ropes.

I'd say it all depends how pixelated 'a bit' is... most DVD's I've played are smooth and very watchable - not pixelated or jaggy.

First ensure you're connected via HDMI, this is your best connection and will enable DVD upscaling. Then check the Upscaling options on the PS3 - I've found the normal setting the best, but try the others also...

Also, whilst playing a DVD, hit the triangle button to access the AV options and you will see various noise reduction filters which, I've found, work well with older material. Worth experimenting with.

Finally, ensure your TV's sharpness setting isn't ramped up - this certainly will make pixelation look worse. Some TV's have the neutral setting at a mid point on the scale, others at the bottom end of the scale. You'll have to work that one out for yourself...

Have you properly set up your screen and turned off all the Samsung "features" such as DNIE and Movie+ etc. generally find these do more harm than good, especially when looking at SD content.

There are entire threads on AV Forums dedicated to peoples settings for these TV's so I would go and have a read around there if you haven't already done so :)

I have the LE40M87BD set running at 1080p from my PS3 and find that the upscaling on the DVD's is pretty good, even compared to my Denon 2930 which is a considerably more expensive bit of kit.

I can concur with this - have been watching Boston Legal on DVD through my ps3 recently and it looks excellent (for a DVD that is)

Obviously HD-DVd/BR looks a lot better - but thats to be expected

Yes i have read through the threads and have changed the settings (for the recommended ones) for the TV when the PS3 is functional.

With these settings, HD material looks stunning and sharp but SD doesnt look all that good.
And i cant, as far as i know, have two individual display settings saved for the PS3 (ie one for HD and one for SD material) on the TV. Either the TV is set to the recommended blu-ray HD settings or either its set for SD material when the input is PS3.

I havent changed any of the settings on the PS3 when watching SD DVD's. Upscaling is set to "Normal" and everything else is default.

The settings im using on the TV for PS3 are (taken from Avforums recommened optimum settings for "HDMI - PS3 Playstation 3 - High Definition - 720p/1080i":

Can i save two individual display settings on the TV for the PS3?
Or would i have to manually change them for when watching either HD or SD material through the PS3?

there is no such thing as SD on the PS3

not as far as the telly can tell at least. It just receives a 1080p signal from the PS3 no matter whats input. This is because the PS3 is an upscaling DVD player

with no way to tell the 2 inputs apart, your telly can only have 1 setting for the PS3.

Ahh right so i should just use the recommended optimum HDMI HD settings then when the PS3 is either playing SD or HD.

What settings do you guys use on the PS3?
Upscaling is set to "Normal" but what about the other settings?

I just have everything on normal on my PS3, although I don't use it for playing back SD DVD's as I said I have a dedicated player for that, and while I admit the PS3 is good I can see some of the problems you talk about, mostly noise on dark areas and I don't think the motion tracking is that good on upscaled DVD's.

I think perhaps you are maybe expecting a little too much from the scaler in the PS3, especially after you have seen how good Blu-ray stuff looks.

If you want an upscaled DVD to look good next to HD stuff you are IMO going to be looking at spending at least two to three times what the PS3 costs on a high end Denon or Arcam unit, anyway that bit is just IMO and I'm not trying to suggest you go out and spend huge amounts of money on something like that :)

One way you could try and get this 'two presets' thing on your TV would be using the differnt picture modes on the Samsung.

In settings you should be able to chose between dynamic (yuck!), standard and movie. You could put the settings for HD/PS3 use into the Movie one and use the standard one to store settings you find give a better picture with SD material and then change between these.
