I was wondering to buy my kids one of these, but the problem with that is that if I ended up buying a secondhand/used one, there may be some sort of problems with it and YLOD being the most common.

Before I buy can someone give me heads up how often or later on the use I may face some sort of problems.

The failure rates of the PS3 arn't that bad. No worse than most electronic items. With anything like that 2nd hand, you don't know how much use it's had or how it's been treated. If you buy new, you can usually get a couple of games as a bundle which might not work out that much more than buying a 2nd hand console then buying games.

Saying that, I bought a Xbox360 and Wii used and so far it is still going good been over 18 months, but the stories I here about PS3's are very scary

If you're comfortable with a 360 you should feel no worse with a PS3. The 360, despite its numerous revisions, still has a failure rate that is probably marginally higher than the PS3.

So buying a PS3 used is better than buying a used Xbox360 right?

I'm sure many would debate the matter, but personally, i'd feel safer buying the PS3. There's certainly very little in it with the newer revision of the 360.

If we were comparing the PS3 to an older (pre-HDMI) revision of the 360, then the PS3 would without a doubt be the more reliable machine.

I wouldn't feel comfortable buying either a used 360, PS3 or Wii though it would depend on how old they are.

I'd argue that the original PS3 phat is actually very error prone and comes with a hefty price tag to fix. Whilst old 360's are more error prone the fact they come with 3 year warranties negates some of this.

Both newer 360's and PS3 slims are arguably far more reliable and if you should go the used route make sure you get one of these.

In summary: I wouldn't touch a 2nd hand PS3 phat with a barge pole and didn't. I got a new 250GB PS3 slim.

to access members market you must meet the criteria which is i think 250 posts and a member for 6 months or something?

as mentioned above though you will get no better deal buying second hand. Buy new, with warranty and games.

They really aint that bad. Only console I would stay away from 2nd hand is the first revision 360s. You would get some sort of warranty with the shop.

As above, when it's hardware buy new and get the benefit of a full warranty.
I have never bought a console 2nd hand, I don't trust other people with sensitive hardware.

I always bite the bullet and get a new one and buy games 2nd hand if possible.

If you are worried about problems with a 2nd hand one you might be better off with a new one?

I got my 60gb on launch day and have had no problems.

Ideally if I was buying one now though I'd be looking at getting a brand new fat with warranty if you can find one or the cheapest slim you can get. If you know where the machine has come from though and that it has been looked after then by all means buy second hand.

If I was buying second hand I'd be worried that the machine had YLOD'd and had a temporary fix done so it could be sold.
