PS3 Gets Downloadable Games
That Game Company is porting its web game for Sony's Next-Gen baby.
by Kathleen Sanders
May 25, 2006 - According to a job posting on CraigsList today That Game Company is looking for "a superstar engineer with a strong graphics background to develop an unannounced downloadable title for the PlayStation 3 launch in November."

IGN contacted That Game Company's developer and president Kellee Santiago who revealed that the game is for a service which will offer downloadable casual games, likely similar to Xbox Live Arcade, and will be available for download on the PlayStation 3's launch day. She went on to say the game would be a port of That Game Company's admittedly addictive, bright blue, and currently free web game flOw- http://intihuatani.usc.edu/cloud/flowing/

This would mean that Sony is planning to compete with the wildly popular Xbox Live Arcade with its own downloadable games.

IGN called Ryan Bowling head of Public Relations at Sony who could only say that this game and any plans for the PS3's online functionality are unannounced.

Hmmm... Sounds familiar.

That's because they haven't finished cutting+pasting from Microsoft's XBox Live announcements ;)

why dont the 3 companies, microsoft.,sony and nintendo get together and just make 1 super console: the MICRONYENDO, lol stop all this arguing :)

Because there would be no competition and then they'd be able to charge whatever the hell they want for the console and games.

Wow, direct rip-off. I hope Sony gets burned with this, on principle alone.

A rip off, yes. But it's a good idea - so I don't think they should be burned with it. If it works well, then I'm all for it - as long as they can pull it off I don't see the problem. It's not as if Microsoft were terrible innovative with the Market Place or Nintendo are with their lack of HD support (IIRC). That's not critisisms on the other companies, as the Market Place is still fantastic and HD doesn't matter.

But neither does the fact Sony is using someone else's framework to make their own system.

A mon avis, ofcourse.

The list of possibles is pretty much endless so I don't think Sony will have any trouble in that regard.

I think its great for 360 and PS3 owners as they will have to compete in both quality and price of there downloadable content... prepare to see some pretty decent arcade titles imo.

Couldn't agree more. Competition between the console makes benefits the gamers in the long run, as they strive to out do each other and give us better value for money. If Sony come out with their own version of the Arcade, MS will in all probably increase the number of games available between now and when the PS3 is launched, and they'll probably try to get as many high profile games as possible. As a 360 owner, that can only be good news.

Agreed.

As an aside... when is the "OMG SONY is copying M$" thing going to stop? As Davey said, this is all good stuff, it makes for a better market for the consumer... time to get over the 'fanboyism' methinks, and start discussing the issues like a group of discerning literate consumers...

It's OcUK thatll never happen :p

Isnt this just an extension to the download PS1 games and play them on PS3/PSP?? and then that would mean they where copying Ninty :p
All 3 of the 'next generation' machines are doing downloadable games, and iirc from the retro thread, ninty done it first, but through Satelite, now how next gen is that baby!! hahaha

I think this will be good, although i tend not to buy games on the Arcade, think i have got 3, they are basic and primative, just want the ante to be upped a wee bit and rather than making mobile phone games that look pretty, they will actually give us good games and classics, Ninty's is the one i would be most looking forward to, although i dont plan on buying a Wii, the downloadable back catalogue does appeal, Sod Hi def marble puzzle games, bring on Metal Gear in full 2D glory baby!

My comment was just a jokey dig an Sony's current lack of concrete information about it's online service, I wasn't putting them down for downloadable games :) XBox live has been such a massive success it's no surprise that Sony is 'copying' it for it's model. I'm sure MS aren't too bothered either, as they've already announced their way of taking it to the next level with Live! Everywhere. I just hope they use it as a starting point and add their own spin/enhancements rather than just trying to duplicate what Microsoft has achieved.

As far as the downloadable games go, I fully expect MS to to enable much smaller development houses, and potentially even hobby programmers, the ability to produce Live Arcade games in the future. Not with full on development kits, but with guidelines on how to program with the current free PC tools and the ability to submit them for MS to approve/sign, with optional microtransaction payments if anyone chooses to download it.
