Theseis for PS3 cancelled - too costly to develop

Track7 Games has contacted PS3Land to inform us that Theseis for PlayStation 3 has been cancelled.

The developer blames the problem on the exceptionally high cost of developing for PS3.

For now, the game will only be released on Xbox 360 and PC.

"If Sony were to offer us assistance in producing a PS3 version we would be more than happy to oblige!" said Vicky Valanos, Managing Director.

Sony really are takning a big risk with the PS3 :(

i'll say it

"oh dear"

lets hope is not the start of a new trend for the ps3, lets hope it doesn't become fashionable to not develop for the ps3 due to high costs

its funny. i can just see somebody says "oh no, not another sony bashing thread". you have to wonder why sony keep making so many mistakes, only to be vigilantly defended by some people on these forums. It's pretty similar to the xb360/failure situation. doesnt matter how many consoles people go through, they are still 'perfectly fine'. (and please dont comment on this if you want an arguement with me, save that for another thread:))

How much more ****taking can sony dish out before they alienate their entire fanbase?

Update:

Track7 Games has contacted us to correct an error. Apparently, Theseis was never in development for PlayStation 3. Here's what Track7 had to say:

"We never began developing the game for PS3 in order to cancel development. We just made a strategic decision to not move ahead because we deemed it not probable at this time."

We apologise for any confusion caused by the original article. Track7 now claim that what they originally told us was a "joke".

There is some truth to your post but it has been changed somewhat here is the proper story with a link :D

News that game developer Track7Games has cancelled a PS3 title because of spiralling development costs were misrepresented, says the development studio.

Originally, PS3Land.com reported the following story yesterday:
Track7 Games has contacted PS3Land to inform us that Theseis for PlayStation 3 has been cancelled.

The developer blames the problem on the exceptionally high cost of developing for PS3.

For now, the game will only be released on Xbox 360 and PC.

I asked the studio for confirmation of this story. Vicky Valanos just mailed me this reply:
track7games would like to respond to the erroneous article that appeared this morning June 29, 2006 on PS3land.com

track7games would like to clarify that they never cancelled something that did not exist in the first place. We plan to develop “Theseis” for PC and Xbox360 in the near future. As for the PS3, we simply made a strategic decision to not move ahead because we deemed it not probable at this time. We are however, open to discussions to develop “Theseis” on all next gen consoles.

In my personal opinion, the studio´s reply is hardly a rebuttal. If anything, they claim that the game was not already in development for the PS3. However, a decision was made not to develop it for that platform. And the budget could very well have been the deciding factor.

Deeming development ´not probable´ and being ´open to discussions´ about PS3 development really seems to hint at financial disagreements. What other discussions are there in this field? They wouldn´t want to complain about the SDK´s colour, would they?

So, after all, this could be a first confirmed case of third party support for the PS3 slipping due to higher development costs

It seems perfectly clear to me. They're not developing the title for the PS3, due to development issues, but as you say, there are probably lots of reasons behind it, but if it's a difficult system to code for, it'll mean more time needed, more money put into the project etc, and smaller developers just can not afford that as they have the risk of games flopping and them losing a whole lot of money.

I'd guess that the game has been in development for some time, there will have been stages of development such as content, that are not platform specific, meaning it'll get developed even before it's going to go on 360/PC etc. Still, as they've said. you can't say it's been cancelled for the PS3 when they never said they were developing it for the PS3 in the first place.

So the PS3 will be home to just sequals by the "big" companies? Should suite the fans that are merely after GT5, MGS5, FF13 etc...

Lets face it often new and exciting games come from the small guys

Why because they cant afford to make liner games

Sony just like microsoft need these guys and its not looking good for sony...

Just like the xbox 360 is. Except that the 360 is also going to be home to a mass of PC ports
Its rare to see smaller companies develop launch Titles for a system, It will come after time.
But dont rule out the independants, aren't Ninja Theory a relativley small independant dev?

Probably, though how many smalltime developers have you seen making stuff for the 360 / PS3 at the moment?

Hopefully we'll get smaller studios with new ideas and projects funded by bigger publishers that want to get something new into the scene... though doubt we'll see very much of that for a bit.

Track7 responds:

"PS3land.com wrote an erroneous article on June 29, 2006 regarding track7games and our upcoming game, "Theseis".

Yet more anti PS3 commentry rubbished. :o

Did no one find that strange? A "joke"... sounds like a rubbish way to cover up your mistakes even if it is Jeff down in PR getting the wrong memo. You never turn around and say it was a joke..
