Hey, I'm possibly going to be buying a PS3 soon and was wondering about the audio outputs on it.

I'm going to be connecting it to my PC monitor using the HDMI connection and I'm wondering if it's possible to connect some 5.1 speakers PC speakers to it? They only have the normal 3.5mm connections.

I've seen a few threads about this, but I'm not too sure on all this stuff.

You'll probably struggle to be honest.

If you're connecting it to your PC speakers it would probably be easier to pipe it through the optical input on your soundcard, and just have it pass through. The downside to this of course is that your PC will need to be on!

Ah I was thinking of that actually, would I just be able to connect my speakers like normal to my sound card and get an optical cable from the sound card's 'Optical out' port to the PS3? Having the PC on shouldn't be too much trouble, I'd probably have it on most of the time I want to use my PS3 anyway.

I know someone who routes his console sound through his PC, so that's certainly possible. check your sound card has an 'optical in' port. It might be Toslink or 3.5mm jack.

Just think - you'll have the power of a PS3, but the noise of an Xbox 360... the best of both worlds. :D

My PC is nowhere near as loud as an Xbox 360, yet graphically superior. :D
