After some consideration ive went an ordered a 160gb HD from here to replace my 60gb, should be here on monday, so ive went a chucked my mp3 player in to see how much space info it would back up and according to the ps3 i need another 15gb ( mp3 is 2gb), im guessing that is becasue of the game data thingy? Like GTA 4, MGS 4 etc etc, so the question is can i delete those before doing my back up, keeping my saved game data without affecting the trophies and my other data?

Installation data is totally separate from saved games etc. ad far as I know. There should be separate sections in the 'Game' part of the XMB to delete the correct one.

Install data is separate and can be lots of GB, you can check this by scrolling above the game and trophy icons on the XMB.
You can delete those and it will reinstall them when you want to play the game again.
Just watch out you do not delete the saves...!!!!!

Trophies are saved on a server somewhere, as said make sure you sync them by selecting trophies on the XMB before changing harddrives just to make sure.

I've been considering replacing my PS3 drive, too and wondered if anyone had tried Acronis as an option for moving the data? Anyone know if there are any issues with imaging the old drive onto the new one. Can't imagine any reason why it wouldn't work, but you never know!

EDIT: Obviously I'm talking about popping the drive out the PS3 and connecting it to my PC to use Acronis!

I am quite sure the PS3 filesystem cannot be read on a Windows PC as it isn't NTFS or FAT32

Yor're correct. I tried this with my PS3. Put the hard drive in the PC and it asks to format the hard drive, I chose no and put the drive back in the PS3. Then the PS3 asked to format the drive as it was unrecognised data, took out hours of work on Wipeout :(

As for the OP. There are 2 entries on the Game tab of the XMB: Game data and Save data. Game data is the area where games install their required data and all patch data, you can remove everything in there to reduce the backup size but you have to go through the installation process and patching again. The Save data area contains your game saves. You can copy them off to an external storage device but some may be protect from copying. Using the backup function will copy them but trophies will have to be synced to the PSN server, they don't get backed up.

Dam 1 screw wont come out, almost taking the head off trying to get it.

Edit: ********, have totally stripped the head off the screw, have tried contacting sony but getting no response :(
