I've never actually owned a PS3, only played on a mates back then.

Wanting to replay some older games as well as decent PS3/Ps2 games I've missed out on.

I've been told the 60GB fat is 100% backwards compatible with PS2 and PS1 correct?

Are the larger GB models also supported nor not?

I believe it's only the 60GB that's backwards compatible yes.

Edit: Just had a look, they removed backwards compatibility on all other models but never explained why. There you go.

That is true!

Sorry that was quite vague wasn't it..

Well racing, rpg mainly. I played a demo of destruction 2 over and over and liked that.

I'm still yet to find an old game i had on PS1, road kill, road rage something. Micro machines-esque top down car racing/shootemup. I''ve scoured many sites but never found it. Possibly on a demo disk.. but not sure.

The UK PAL CECHCxx 60GB "Fat" version is ~95% backwards compatible with PS2 games as part of the PS2 emulation is software based (The Japanese 20GB CECHBxx and 60GB CECHAxx have full hardware PS2 backwards compatibility)

All models after that (even 40GB and 80GB and 160GB "Fat" Models, do not have any PS2 backwards compatibility).

All models from "Fat", "Slim" and "Super-slim" all support PS1 games, as that is software emulated on all models.

No

Cost cutting - as essentially the Japanese PS3's contained the two main chips from a PS2 purely for Backwards compatibility. The First PAL ones removed the "Emotion Engine" chip, reducing cost (but reducing compatibility slightly). Further versions remove both chips ("Emotion Engine" and "Graphics Synthesizer") to further reduce costs.

EDIT: A lot of PS1 and PS2 games have been released on PSN as digital downloads (and are often on offer), so may be worth looking at what is available on there.

Ah a bit more of a complete answer there you go :) Makes a lot of sense to save money. Also, that is true a lot of PS1/2 titles can be got from PSN and most are pretty cheap(ish).

There is also a Micro Machines PS2 game IIRC that was pretty darn good.

Also, do you mean like JRPG or more Western RPG?

Also, almost completely unrelated, but there is a pretty decent catalogue of horror games on PS2 if that's what you're into. :) I have an old PS2 sitting at home and often trawl eBay etc looking for classics.

I think a PS3 Slim/Super Slim with a PS2 Slim is probably better idea than to hunt for a launch PS3 60Gb just for PS2 BC

Also quite a few popular PS2 titles got remastered for the PS3 so double check as a PS3 only might be as suitable for you...

ps3ud0

Probably a safer idea, as most of the 60GB "Fat" PS3s will have had YLOD by now and no guarantee that repaired ones last much longer.

The backwards compatible PS3 also has 4 USB ports on the front and a selection of memory card slots behind a flap on the front also.

Just so you don't go buying a 60GB model they may not be backwards compatible, the above is another way to know what you're buying.

Had mine since the day of launch, still strong with no issues :) BUT don't know how long it will last.

The one I bought new at launch YLOD, same with 2 other people at work who bought them same week also died.

I did get another one off ebay (warranty stickers intact), as the kids were still playing PS2 games at the time, have replaced the thermal paste and given it a clean out and still going strong though :).
