Is it as good as a dedicated player? As a dedicated player is £199 and a PS3 is £289, so it's a no brainer for an extra £90.

Very good yes, infact there's a few reports that it's better than some standalone players.

You've got the added bonus of constant updates via PSN for firmware that continually ensure that your Blu-Ray player is up to date, which had been the downfall of older players.

It also loads disks a lot faster than conventional players as well.

The picture is wonderful on mine, definately worth the extra £90

It's an excellent player and it the only Profile 2 compatible player you can get for reasonable money.

I bet the one you can get for £199 is only Profile 1.1. Of course that might not make a difference, you'd have to compare the differences on wikipedia to see if it matters to you.

Also, remember to at £20 for the PS3 remote!

Does it upscale all ok to 1080p for older DVD's?

Also will it playback DivX HD?

Yep it upscales wonderfully, even old DVDs :)

HD DivX support was added in the 2.10 Firmware in December(ish) last year.

We're now on 2.41 I believe.

Updating the PS3 is as simple as setting up it's wireless connection (or plugging in an ethernet cable), letting it go online... and it'll tell you there is a new firmware update available. Click continue, and wait a few minutes for it to download and install... BOOM... jobs done :)

Gotta agree with this, I'm still using the PS3 Six-Axis controller for Blu-Ray/DVD playback. Whilst it works fine, it's certainly not the most practical thing.

It's next on my list to purchase, I just keep forgetting to buy one until I go to watch a movie... then think.. "D'oh, gotta buy the remote!" :o

Excellent, now need to convince the Mrs (having just convinced her to get the Panny TH42PZ80B ;))

There is no convincing and you will be wrong either way, so just buy the things and she can deal with it when they arrive, as you will be playing with them and enjoying yourself too much to care :D

Would buy a PS3, but need IR control as standard, also standby/power up via IR, region free blu ray plus 7.1 analogue RCA out (DTS master audio outputted to those outputs)

BR isn't region free on anything unless the disc itself is, nothing to do with the PS3.

If you have a learning remote or something like the Logitechs then there should be a PS3 profile already for you to download.

only the pc drives as far as I know (totally different kettle of fish to stand alone's)

Havent heard of any EU available stand-alones that have a remote hack (although there may be "installers" who add after-market benefits)

There are remote hacks for a couple and quite a few more are available modified. It's not something I really follow though since I have A & B PS3's.

jus finished watchin the matrix revolutions, normal dvd ,even tho it aint blu ray the pic quality was awesome..

i really need to get some blu rays now! :D
