Hey chaps,

Just wanted to know,The Blu Ray drive on the PS3 is it just as good as a stand alone Blu Ray player you can buy in the shop or is it at a lower quality?

I was wondering because i need a Blu Ray player,But i was also thinking of trading my 360 in for a PS3 at Gamestation so if i did that would solve two problems with one shot.

Also,Is the Blu Ray drive in the older (Fat) PS3 the same as the one in the newer (Slim) PS3?

Thx in advance for any replies. :)

Well it supports 3D + DTS HD so yeah its a good Blu-ray player for the money, not to clued up on Blu-ray players so not to sure if its cheaper now just buying a standalone player or the PS3

I use my fat PS3 for bluray in the front room, the quality looks good to me. Ive never owned a normal bluray player so cant compare. A bonus I guess would be the software updates from Playstation network so you know the ps3/bluray is always up to date.

The added bonus of course is a gaming console too with some cracking games to be had!

EDIT: A downside that may exist is region locking (do blu rays have regions?) if so, a normal blu ray player could be software or hardware hacked to be multi region, a PS3 cant. Well, it can be mod chipped if you wanted but that possibly means borking your shiny console and a playstation network ban.

Yeah PS3's are region locked for Blu-rays yet not for games  however you can get multi-region Blu-ray players

In terms of picture quality and codecs supported i believe the PS3 is still considered a good/very good bluray player (though the slim is better as it supports proper bitstream iirc). Keep in mind even the slim units use multiple times more electricity than a standalone bluray player though.

It al ldepends on what you want. You can get better Bluray players than the PS3, of course and as mentioned it'll use less power and you have the possibility to play region locked blurays if you desire.

However, the PS3 bluray player is very good and it can do so much more than a bluray player. Only worth it if you want these features, but my PS3 serves as a complete media centre and does everything to a very high standard. (music, photo albums, blurays, TV, games etc etc).
One extra benefit over the 360 regarding movies other than the obvious bluray > dvd is that it's much easier to connect the PS3 to your surround sound via optical cable. The 360 has stupidly put the optical slot in totally the wrong place (on the 'component' lead) meaning i can't get HD and Surround sound at the same time. Idiots. lol

the new 360 is not like that for optical :) and off course you could still get hd and optical at the same time even with the old xbox which really was not hard to do, just a case of plugging the optical in, same as you do on PS3 lol

Well not on the lead I have. The optical socket is on the 'component' lead. So to gain use of the optical socket I must plug the component lead in. The problem here is, that you can not plug the HDMI lead in once you have the component lead in, it completely blocks the HDMI socket on the console.

And if setting the switch to HD on the component lead gives anything like HD picture quality then i'm a slightly feminine robot with a spoon fetish.

Still, the only purpose of buying a 360 was BF3 with friends, and i'll have headset on therefore don't mind about not plugging the surround sound in.

you must have a composite cable or have not plugged it in right then as the component cable gives HD no problem at all, maybe just looks rubbish on your TV :)

The new slim solves any such problems anyway and there was always ways to connect optical to the old ones, so saying you can't have optical and HD was just not really true ;)

when the ps3 first came out it was as good as a £300 blu ray player + the benefits of gaming ( and it didnt have iplayer etc then ) ......these days a good £100 will probably beat it on pic/sound quality . but for the extra £60 ( for a 160 gig ) its still a good blu ray purchase.

its at the price point now that i'm thinking of getting one ... even tho ive got 3 blu ray players atm

Remove the plastic casing on the end of the component cable and it fits fine.

Seriously? *bangs head off desk*
And my company let me run an entire department, they must be insane! I have the observation of a particularly blind monkeywith an extremely opaque bucket on it's head. (yes, i watch a lot of 80s british comedy...)

I deff notice a difference between the HDMI lead and the RGB lead. Mind you, even WITH the HDMI lead the 360 just isn't as nice a picture as the PS3, not for me at least. Could just be the horrible design of the Dashboard though. :p I have yet to play a game on it...lol

Maybe I should have shelled out more cash for the better model eh.

So does that mean I have to walk around work being feminine, talking like a robot and licking a spoon? Because if that's the case....sweeeeeet!

to be fair removing the plastic casing is not a feature of the cable so you would not notice it, you will need to butcher it to get it off, but as said once it's off then it will fit :)

Fair enough.lol. I stand redeemed.

I'll judge how much of a better picture i'll get. I really ought to test it with a game and if it's a big improvement i'll butcher it.
But as i said, i'll be wearing headphones (the large kind) so surround sound will be heard more by my friends over the mic than myself!

Now that's sorted, apologies for hijacking the thread there...

A couple of thin flat headed screwdrivers and you should be fine, and if you ever want it back on you can glue it, it won't be noticeable.

The PS3 phat is not a silent bluray player, and it consumes a lot more electricity so i would say no, it is a far cry from a standalone.

The Slim, is almost there with a standalone cos it's almost silent, but if absolute silence is your thing, then go with a stand-alone. Pic quality and sound is on par with my Panasonic DMP-BD65.
