Shooters generally attract a competitive bunch. Between the trash talk and bragging rights players often use any means necessary to get a competitive edge. Bannco’s FRAGnStein presents an intriguing option for the console gamer that takes their shooting seriously. PC gamers have lauded the use of the mouse since the first shooters started appearing on consoles. PlayStation LifeStyle runs the FRAGnStein through a shooting decathlon and the results are impressive.
This controller will not make you a shooter whiz overnight. Tweaking will be required as each game tends to track the look mechanism differently. Bannco will be supporting the controller through a configuration application as well as firmware and driver updates. Firmware updates can be loaded via your PC using the USB dongle.
The mouse is very smooth the buttons are easy to get to albeit slightly stiff when fresh out of the box. This is especially true for the scroll button when you push down (R3). This can be a little frustrating for melees in game, but the button does wear in well. The scroll wheel also functions to look around. Scrolling up, down as well as pivoting left and right will move the reticule accordingly.
A function button can be pressed and held while the scroll wheel is rotated to adjust the hardware sensitivity. Making things too sensitive causes the mouse to lose some aim fidelity and becomes “jumpy” if taken to an extreme. Experimenting with this feature as well as in game look sensitivity is a surefire way to boost the effectiveness. One feature most shooter based controller have is autofire. FRAGnStein will not disappoint as you can enable and disable autofire on the fly. Simply press and hold the function button and click the shoot button to toggle on and off. Autofire rate can be fine-tuned in the configuration utility.
The movement wand is weighted nicely and rests comfortably in the palm. The analog directional stick reacts very true to the DualShock heritage, down to the forgiving yet responsive L3 press. The d-pad has a familiar responsive feel as well. The left shoulders could be a bit easier to get to the ergonomics here appear to prefer symmetry. The edges are not sharp at all so this did not make the wand uncomfortable use, even in longer play sessions.
With two wireless items it is unclear which item is represented in the battery indicator when you press the PS button. The unit requires two AA batteries and yes, batteries are included.
One thing the FRAGnStein is missing is wires. This provides unhindered experience, which is a different approach from the FragFX v.2 from SplitFish. FRAGnStein is a 100% compatible PlayStation product complete with a PS button and SixAxis support.
The following games were tested and overall worked well if not excellent. Multiplatform games seem to require less tweaking overall. Surprisingly SOCOM works very well with this controller. Killzone 2 will require quite a bit of tweaking. Some experimenting with the in game sensitivities and the mouse sensitivities will be necessary.

Far Cry 2
FEAR 2: Project Origin
COD: Modern Warfare
