Now I've had Virgin Media upgrade my 50mb to 100mb last week and I did a connection test on my ps3 through both a wired connection and wireless connection, now my wireless connection showed up as 10mb down and 10mb up, my wired showed up as 20mb down and 10mb up.

Now the upload is correct and I expect the test to be off somewhat but it's 80mb off for download and I know it's not my connection as it's been stable since it was upgraded as I've done many speed tests since on my pc and it has been fine.

I thought the wired connection would go full speed as I thought the PS3 had a gigabit NIC.

So does anyone know if it's either some really crappy speed test servers or if there's a more serious problem with my ps3?

i don't think it has anything to do with the ps3 virgin media seem to have gimped their network when it comes to console gaming i know people that have 50mb and they have problems, when we play a private match they can't host because it gets so laggy.

I used to have 50mb and the connection test always got my upload correct (3.6mbit) but download wrong (20mbit). Also was never able to download games from PSN at max speed.

I suspect this is more to do with Sony limiting the speed an individual can reach on PSN than Virgin Media. Or maybe both.

I doubt it's VM as I don't have a problem on Xbox LIVE (can roughly test the speed by timing a download).

I've always found Virgin to offer pretty rubbish speeds when downloading demos and things on xbox live so wouldnt be surprised if VM were the source of the problem. Having said that I just tested a 750 mb demo which took roughly 4 minutes to download which is what 187mbs/min so 3mbs second which isnt too bad compared to how it can be and has been in the past and at peak times.

People always blame virgin but when I was on virgin the 360 and pc could max out my connection every time yet the PS3 could take up to 3 hours for some of the bigger patches.

I tested by patching the same game (burnout paradise) on 360 then PS3, on 360 it took 7 mins, on PS3 it took an hour and half

They weren't freak results either, the PSN is always that slow

I think your right, It seems like it's just PSN has some slow servers.

I am on Sky BB and can max out psn, xbox live and the PC no problem:cool:

Problem is I can easily match your max speeds so that doesn't really prove anthing.

PSN maxes out a lot of people's connections on upto 24MB services (ADSL2+ LLU etc). People who have 10/20MB on VM have not been able to max speeds like that so that proves it is not being throttled etc from PSNs side. Some people on VM have been able to max out connections, but only after they have had their modem/routers swapped/tweaked by VM engineers. This has been highlighted in many threads here. Something to do with the routers configs, or the route that PSN takes to VMs network.

The fact some people with VM have managed to get the speed maxed out (like on PC and 360) points to the problem being with VM network and/or their equipment.

Having said that I am sure their is a speed cap from PSN's end so I would not expect to get the full 100mb bandwidth from your PS3. No matter what company provided servers No-one has enough bandwidth to saturate 100s/1000/s of people connecting at 100mb simultaneously.

You can max out your 100mbit connection downloading from Xbox Live? If true I guess all those Live subs are actually funding a decent infrastructure after all. :p

I don't think there is anything wrong or anything you can do; you can't expect every service to be able to max out a 100mbit connection. Just because your connection is capable of receiving at 100mbit doesn't mean PSN can (or would want to) output at 100mbit for every customer. As 20mbit seems to be a figure most users are getting regardless of ISP it seems likely this is what Sony have opted to restricted their service to.

I researched this a while back, a lot. I have a Fibre connection on BT Infinity and I get 37mb down and 8mb up. On wireless some what like you, I get around 10mb down and 4mb up. On wired I get around 20mb down and 7mb up, I never get anywhere near my full speeds. I ended up buying a new PS3 (not because of this I wanted a slim with more storage) and I got the exact same speeds so it wasn't an issue with the PS3. I also have a few friends on Fibre, 2 with Infinity and 1 isn't I think he's using ADSL24 and none of them get even close to their full speeds.

The issue definitely seems to be with PSN, if you do a google search on this you'll find a slew of forum threads about the same problem. Guys have tried different routers etc but nobody has really figured it out yet. I seen a forum thread with a guy saying you need to open certain ports to get full speed, I tried this and it didn't work. No resolution for you sorry but just saying, I feel your pain =)

Thought i'd quote this to get it in here again as it's pretty much on the mark from what i've read.

Stuff downloads much faster on my BeThere 13mbit connection from the PSN than it did on my 20mbit Virgin connection. As RP says, i'm sure they DO limit the connection to some extent, but they certainly supply at least up to 20mbit as i know several people with those sorts of ADSL connections that get maximum speed 24 hours a day. Virgin throttle something to do with the PSN, apparently it treats it like it would treat torrent connections someone said on these forums only a week or so ago.

As I said in my first post I can get 20mb down with a wired connection so even if VM are throttling then I'm still getting the same as people on ADSL.

Still looks like the culprit is PSN, VM might have something to do with it too but I doubt it's the main problem.

I have the same problem my connection is virgin media 50 mb connection but it is so laggy and i seem to be on a couple of miliseconds behind other players. It is very annoying.

Its a Virgin media and PSN problem. Its basic traffic shaping. same with Youtube users on Virgin media, a lot of them get traffic shaped also. Which is shocking service

Doubt it all you want, it often comes up on the cable forums. It's traffic shaping

Dont seem to have a problem with lag/ DL speed on my VM and on my 30MB connection i get 16mb on the speed test thats about 2x the speed of the average UK connection so i dont notice an issue.
