PS3 Crap networking capabilities or crap servers?

Have to admit I found my PS3 Fat and now my Slim to have pretty crap connection speeds out of the box, e.g. 20mb patches taking forever, I followed a wifi settings guide for ps3 and both my previous fat and current slim improved dramatically, making full use of my broadband connection.

I am on Sky Unlimited and my PS3 has no problems maxing out my connection, all my downloads will come down at 1.5mb/s.

I used to be on Virgin and the traffic shaping / management always nuked downloads after awhile.

No issues with PSN here.

Either a problem solely on Virgins side, or some sort of compatibility issue between PSN and Virgin.

p.s. my speeds are always represented correctly.

Have you tested downloads speeds through the PS3's built-in web browser on something like speedtest.net or a download mirror?

just tried my ps3 at www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk and it was averaging around 44Mb download. That's wired through a gigabit switch to my superhub on a 50Mb connection. Like just about everybody else on virgin i still have slow psn downloads, so it has to be traffic shaping or ports specific to the psn and not a hardware issue.

Right so I have 100Mb VM BB, I run my ps3 wired and get about 25Mb down, 10Mb up when I do the connection test. Get considerable more when do a speed test thru the browser on the ps3. Not too bothered by this tho as can download things pretty fast off psn. 2gb in about 8-10 mins.

I'm sure I read somewhere that's it's because of the type of servers(or whatever) that the PSN uses,it makes VM think it's a file share so you get gimped with it.
Saying that PSN always downloads quite slow for me as well and i'm with talktalk.
