Don't think anybody has given an accurate answer on this, but I'm sure 2x Blu-Ray is quite fast, ans 2x DVD doesn't equate to 2x CD, just as 2x Blu-Ray won't equate to 2x DVD, though I'm pretty sure Blu-Ray will spin slower than the 12x DVD drive though.

According to this (google brought it up), 2x BR is about 1700rpm where as 12x dvd is about 7000rpm.

This indicates that the PS3 drive would be a lot quieter. Also, as you are aware, there are reports claiming that the PS3 is near silent. A very big plus imo.

Hmm, that sounds pretty good there, as when I originally got my PS2, I was shocked at how loud it was, then at the Xbox being even louder, and the 360 louder still, It'll be a good thing going back to PS1 loudness, as long as it can handle the heat

Yeah definitely. It's a shame that the 360 is so loud as it prevents me playing at night when others in the house are in bed. If the PS3 is silent then it's a big plus for me and others.

2X blu-ray is 72MB/s which is more than 3 times faster than DVD 16X and it uses constant linear velocity so the transfer speed will always be constant no matter where the laser is, unlike dvd.

Im suprised that the ps3 is so quiet considering it has the psu inside it whereas the 360 has a huge psu hanging off it and still is noisy and overheats.
