PS3 Crashing?

I have had my Jap import for several months now and it does occasionally crash (just freezes - touching power button for five secs does a reset), although tbh it's only happened probably about 4 times in about three months. I initially thought it there was something wrong, but then after getting the 360 I get the same kind of problems about just as often (which is very rare) so I thought it was just down to the fact that modern consoles are probably more like PC's than consoles of old, with their OS etc, and my PC crashes occasionally too - maybe that's just the way it is now?

your probably right joebob. when you think of the hardware inside the 360 and PS3, and the heat it generates, they're incredible bits of kit and i'd forgive them the occasional lock up (which, to be honest is more likely down to software)

Ive folded over night twice ( good eight hour stint on both) and neither had an issue when exiting.

Could be an issue with f@h - even though I would have thought it would happen with everyone if this was the case - or it could be either flaky ram or flaky hdd - is f@h contained wholly within the RAM or does it use a lot of hdd activity as each time you enter it does say dont exit during hdd activity?

Well I guess whether it's Sony or Microsoft, there will still be problems. My advice is to return the console A.S.A.P.

Also I don't understand why people fold there consoles, I don't see any advantage over a computer and personally I wouldn't want to put that extra strain on the CPU, since I would want it to last as long as possible.

I'll keep it for now and see if it continues to crash, if it does i'll demand a replacement. It's only crashed so far when exiting F@H so i'm not so sure if it's really anything to do with the hardware.

yeah because the shelf-life of CPU's is so short...

I think people fold on their PS3's because the feauture is there and it makes you feel like you are doing some good, a bit like giving to charity in a way but rather than giving cash you are giving CPU time.

Yeah, I see what you mean there but personally I don't think it's worth lessing the life of a £400 high end console. Now on a computer were all parts are servicable, I see why you could do it there, but I personally think it's a waste on a console.

ours seems to be fine running folding at home

theres a dodgy music file on my phone memory card that crashes it though , crashes my phone too actually :p

I dont think Sony would have released it if this were likely to be honest

The only thing that could really wear out is the psu - and this would happen no matter what you are doing.

CPU's, RAM, GPU's dont just wear out

OK hdd do too, the constant spinning up and down isnt great for the motor and heads especially but folding doesnt use the hdd that often i dont think
