For years, PlayStation 3 players have been begging for cross-game chat -- the ability for players to be in separate games and still talk to each other using the PS3 console. Sony has now confirmed that feature will never come to the system.

The news comes from a Eurogamer interview with Sony Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida. Apparently, the PS3's RAM is used by the game the system is running. Because of that, the console can't support cross-game chat like the Xbox 360 does.

Good. Can play my games in peace. Never ever seen the appeal. Used to join a friend's party back in the CoD WaW days on 360 and it was full of people playing different games. Most not talking, the rest talking distracting rubbish.

So if they did bring it to PS3, how would you have coped?

Seems like you think its compulsory to use or something?

Thought this was pretty much the main feature of PS+. I get lonely on Xbox if I'm not in a party with mates talking about rubbish. :p

I play online quite a bit on both consoles, and the 1 single most annoying issue is lack of cross game chat, it is just plain weird to not be able to just chat to your mates while grinding for some credits etc..

But after 2 years of no-show I pretty much resigned myself to it never coming, and the main reason I keep buying 95% of all third party games on Xbox..

Well if the Nextbox is due late 2012/mid 2013, I'm sure the PS4 will be along, and from the Vita specs, it's clear they've learnt that plenty of RAM is needed, so bring it on!

what a surprise, psn gets 1 new feature every year and its usually crap, but they normally have 8 firmware updates a year with useless junk in them.

whoever is running psn needs firing, the whole hacking saga, home being turd, etc. its just fail after fail.

also the network features of the ps3 are lame, it cannot fully utilise my 50mb connection, store loads slow, trophies load slow, browser is slow, etc.

i think it uses like 10% of my connection at max.

They really need to up the ante for the PS4, even just now, I went into GT5, and after 20 seconds it tells me it can't progress until I do a system update, but as per usual, you have to back out and manually go and update.. what a faff..

i can put money on it they won't, microsoft have decades of experience in networking infrastructure, etc. they also have pools of cash to throw at any problem.

sony have made huge losses several times within the past few years. sure they are still a huge company but they are nowhere near as financially strong as they were 20 years ago. 20 years ago they were a market leader, nowadays i dont own anything sony apart from my ps3.

i used to have headphones, tv's, mobiles, compact cd players, hi-fi's, etc but now they are just like any other generic brand out there.

i just want decent online speeds, no lagg in games, decent download speeds, that's it.

Are people really so impatient nowadays that they can't go and make a cup of tea while a game updates?

I'd just had my cup of tea, had 20 minutes spare, thought I'd do another event in GT5, and bam...

It's not about being impatient, it's more frustration that it is so convoluted and drawn out, If your phone did this randomly when you went to make a phone call, I'm sure you'd mind.. ;)

Not bothered, but if they knew this then it's a bit **** they took so long to admit it.

Agreed. I find it hard to believe it has taken them years to figure out the amount of RAM in the machine is not sufficient for this task. imo they have only admitted it now because the Vita has just been announced to have Voice Chat (I believe that has double the RAM compared to PS3). No doubt this admission is to quell the inevitable "Why can't PS3 do it if Vita can and PS3 is more powerful than Vita" etc etc.

The numerous times this feature has been rumoured like:

1) PS+ feature
2) Feature that works on all games but doesn't on EA sports games so they canned it
3) When firmware 3.0 was released

would all have been better time to concede this was not possible imo.

ive had updates take longer than 2 hours (eye of judgement) and im on 50MB, im pretty sure i could have cultivated a crop of tea in that time :o

Many people on Virgin Media have reported on here, many, many, many times, that their bandwidth does not get maxed out by PSN. This is to do with certain routers/STBs and or Virgin Media peering. Other people on ADSL2+ services getting upto 20MB are able to max out their connections on PSN. This problem is with the ISP imo.
