My old 60GB has given up the ghost so I'm off out now to buy a new one. Is there anyway to get the data off my old HDD and any suggestion as to what I can do with my old broken unit?

BTW: I can't even turn it on, so am unable to access the XMB

If it will not turn on there is no way to retrieve any data from it.

You could try and get the PS3 fixed. It costs up to around £90 for Sony to fix them, depending on this problem. They might even do it for free if you ask nice and they are in a good mood. I got my ~20 month old 40gb repaired free.

If you know someone with a 60GB unit, you could try swapping your HDD into theirs and then retrieving the data you want? If you put it into a slim you are forced to format/update etc, but I think it should be OK to put into a 60GB (or maybe even a 40gb?)

Cheers, well I have several friends with the 60GB version but I'm sure the HDD is tied to the console?

I will give Sony a call tomorrow and see if I can get it repaired for free, alternatively I know there's a place that does repairs for £55 so may try that if I get no luck with Sony.

I don't really care about the console, more interested in getting my data of the HDD as I have my holdiay photo's, some films and all my music on it.

As soon as you put the drive in another PS3 you are forced to format the drive before it will work, you also cannot connect it to a PC to get the data back.

It sucks, I had the same, now I backup my data every week to an external drive.

Well I've now decided to attempt to repair it myself.....

If only to get my disk and data of the HDD so as long as it works for long enough to do that I'll be happy :)

can you still retrieve your psn account on the new ps3 or do you have to deactivate the old ps3 first?

this is something ive wondered if my ps3 ever had the same problem

please people. don't store your one and only copy of photos etc on a ps3

never understood why anyone would do that

You can just use your PSN details on a new PS3, all the synched trophies are also stored on a server and you can redownload all stuff from the PSN

I know you say you cant turn it on Edz, but does that mean you dont even get the red standby light? or does it get the YLOD?

The YLOD is the fault :(

Yep got my account on my new PS3 just need my saved game data, photo's etc off the old one.

You could try to fix it yourself, look on youtube for 'PS3 reflow' or get it fixed by a 3rd party repair shop but they will charge you for it, I think it's ~75 quid

There's a shop in Crawley that will fix it for £55, but I fancy a challenge :)

Anyway I've started to strip it down and have managed to get the disk out, so far so good unfortunately I don't have any thermal paste so will have to wait for that until I attempt the re-flow.

Sony want £131 so I told them where to go....

"managed to get the disk out"

Not by deconstructing the blu-ray I hope ? I foolishly did that and the gears don't snap back in properly if it is taken apart in the "disk inserted" position, took longer to get it working properly than the rest of the job....

Crap, yeah I opened the drive to remove the disk so of course it will now be in the position of having a disk in :(

Does anyone know if i put the HDD in a caddy can I get the data across onto my laptop or new PS3?

If I can then stuff the repair I'll just bin the old console..

Pretty sure the HD contents are encrypted differently for each individual PS3. Even if you could hook it up to another PS3 or even a PC, it wouldn't do any good.

You could strip your BD drive down again and just chuck another disc in there in its place like an audio CD or something? It's probably worth trying to get it working again for long enough for you to be able to back up your data so you can migrate it to a new one. Then you'd be able to sell your old one on as a fixed unit with no guarantee of reliability.

No, the PC will not recognize the filesystem.

I think maybe there is a small chance with a Linux system or another 'special' OS/Filesystem but it isn't easy at all if not impossible.
