... and another one's gone and another one's gone and another one bites the dust :(

Well my 60gb ps3 just died, yellow light, followed by flashing red light.

now the decisions.. do I pay for the repair or sell this ps3 as faulty (without the hdd, dont want my data going anywhere) and buy a new one?

If you're feeling brave and its out of warranty, Get yourself a heatgun from somewhere, Borrow or buy. And follow one of the online guides. I've now done 3 PS3 machines, and none of them have stopped working since. 1 of them was well over a year ago aswell.

removing the hdd is more about stopping someone else fixing it and accessing the accounts on it, than saving the data tbh.
had a quick google, managed to find a local repairer who offers ylod repair for £40 and offers a 3 month warranty. think thats my best option for now.

No one can get the info from the HDD its encrypted with a code linked to your PS3, if you use it on another PS3 it will require a format before the PS3 does anything. If i was you i would get it fixed then use the backup facility then trade it in against a slim, the person who buys your PS3 gets a year warranty in most case and you get a new machine with another year warranty.

Yes but if he sells the PS3 as faulty with the HDD and then someone fixes it ...

I'd pay to get it reballed, personally. It'll be cheaper than Sony's repair but a bit more expensive than someone's own ghetto heatgun repair. However, if I went that route I'd at least have some confidence in the system working reliably long-term and wouldn't be wondering whether it'll boot up or not every time I power it on. I think reballs on PS3s are around the £60 to £70 mark. Since the lead-free solder is gone though, it's the best bet.

- Fix it yourself (you keep the data)
- Get it fixed by a gameshop (you keep the data)
- Sell it and get a new Slim (you lose the data)

When my refurb 60gb PS3 died again I went out and bought a new Slim, much quieter which is a big plus and I sold my broken 60gb for 80 euro

Vengence,

If you feel competent enough have a go at fixing it yourself.

I fixed mine last week. Check out Gilksy PS3 fix on youtube. It comes in 6 parts and is really easy to follow. He has recorded the whole procedure.
I bought a heat gun for £20. Follow the instructions and you should be ok.

Cheers

mines gone today as well, its 40gig but i have a 260gig with lots of stuff on, if i try to do it myself, which i will probably do, will the ps3 need to format my Hdd ? i really dont want to lose the data.

I have the old 60gig PS3 but i'd replaced it with a 500gig.
You wont have to reformat the drive.
You have to remove the drive and strip the PS3 down to the bare motherboard.
You reflow the solder on the motherboard at 4 points and then reassemble, Use decent thermal paste (I used arctic silver)

Check out youtube as I said previously. It does state that this fixes 90% with th YLOD but it could also be caused by a faulty PSU or Blu ray.

It isn't a permanent fix, it will allow you to backup the data and maybe sell the PS3.

It might last a few months or a few days.
