Hello,

Own'ed a 360 since lauch and sold it back in June. Not missed gaming much untill now :p i need a console back :)

I was more than happy with my xbox 360 (had the elite model), but now i am looking at getting another console i seem to be fancying a PS3.

I like the fact of having a blue-ray player built in :) if it was confirmed the 360 was getting a blue-ray player i would get a xbox without a question to be honest.

I do kinda fancy a change though :) also theres the little game of MGS 4 i wanna play :p

Anyone explain the differences between the different models of PS3 ? i can see 40Gb, 60Gb, 80Gb and 160Gb :confused:

Whats the best one to get ?

Any other info/input would be great :)

Also any word on price cuts for the PS3 before x-mas ?
Thanks Ben

40, 80 and 160gig are all the same aside from the harddrive size. You can fit nearly any laptop HDD yourself so i wouldn't worry about that too much; if you need to make it bigger you easily can without voiding the warranty.

The only 'different' one is the 60gig, this has more USB sockets, memory card readers and the most significant difference; the ability to play PS2 games. The three models above lack a key component that allows you to play PS2 games, it was removed to cut costs. The 60gig can only be bought second hand now and costs a pretty penny.

I wouldn't expect any price cuts until after christmas, after all, sony will want to rinse the xmas shoppers for all they're worth (as does everyone)

Thanks.

Well to be honest not really fussed about playing PS2 games. And lacking a few USB ports aint a biggy really. However i would miss the memory card reader :(

Think i might get the 80Gb version with MGS4, any idea on best price ??? looking around £340 can i be had for less (no need to tell me the place just a yes or no)

Best i can find is £295 with Little Big Planet (which looks like it's going to be a great game), you can then pick up MGS4 for as little as £30 online, that comes to £325 for a PS3 80GB and 2 games :)

I have a release 60GB console.

Do you think I could swap it for an 80GB and make a profit?

You could sell it privately and make enough money to buy a new 80gb and have some change left over. Not sure if you would get that in a trade (I am assuming you mean one of the high street stores, and they will not give you a fair value for the 60gb console, IMO).

If you don't care about the reduced functions in the 80GB it is well worth it (just to get a new 1 yr warranty).

I have a 40GB, might change the HDD in a few months time, so I can copy all my CD's onto it.

Does it matter if it is SATA, or SATA-II? Also it has to be a 5400 RPM HDD doesn't it?

IIRC you want a 5400rpm sata-II drive, i think both sata and 7200rpm drives work, but may have issues, the drive that comes with the PS3 is a Sata-II 5400rpm, best to keep things the same. Be careful however, a teeny tiny minority of laptop hard drives are ever so slightly larger than normal and won't fit in the PS3. I think the samsung drives are a safe bet.

If you never use the added features of the 60gb i wouldn't hesitate to sell it. The advantages of getting a 80gb go further than a new warranty, they're cooler, generally quieter and have reduced power consumption (marginally smaller electricity bills, yay!)

[EDIT] Sorry, double post, figured i may as well make use of both of them!

Can anyone recommend a good USB2 hub for the PS3 that will charge up the controllers, allow PlayTV to function properly and access the files on my memory stick? Two is simply not enough on an entertainment device of this calibre.

Datel and Nyko both do card readers with extra USB port(s) designed for 40gb/80gb etc owners. I think the Datel one supports a shedload of card formats whereas the Nyko one just supports what the older PS3s did. Never used one so read reviews. They are both about 13 quid each.

Sorry, by memory stick I mean USB flash drive! :D I'm just a bit ignorant of hubs. Last time I used a USB hub, they all had warnings about not plugging certain devices in, e.g. you couldn't plug an external HDD into the USB hubs on an Apple keyboard. Has all this nonsense vanished with dedicated USB2 hubs? Do certain peripherals still need to be connected to a USB port on the system? Is a mains powered one best?

EDIT: Something like this perhaps? http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CC-003-BE

That one is powered (so you need to plug into the mains). If you are just plugging in devices for file transfer, from my experience, it makes no difference. Mains power becomes an issue when you are charging devices etc that require more power than the USB BUS onboard can provide. I think you are safe to get a 3 port passive one which will give you the full 4 ports of older PS3s.

Can't see many details on the page, but something like this?

I have that same hub with my headset and two controllers (when charging) attached to it. It seems to work fine (passively most of the time). The cables are a bit iffy though, power comes out of one side, upstream USB the other and the four ports are splayed in an arc across one of the wide sides.

OK heres my 2ps worth, get the 160GB PS3, you can get it from one of the large game retailers for 359 with Fallout 3. This includes GT5 prolougue, Super Stardust HD, The Last Guy and Ratchet and clank quest for booty. You can also get it with Fifa 09 for the same price or for £339 without anyonther games. This is a far better deal than any of the 80GB ones as you are getting about £40 worth of PSN titles and an extra 80 GB of HDD space for only £40 more. If you shop around you will probably find it cheaper on the net. I think a 160GB Hdd will be about the £40 mark so if you want to upgrade to a 160GB HDD it would cost you the same but it wouldnt include all the free PSN games.
