Treated myself to a shiny 120gb PS3 yesterday buy already i appear to have issues with it.

Im finding that during games (tried MOH and Fifa11 so far), the screen goes blank for a split second and comes back on. Also, i ocassionally get a black and grey chequered stripe along the bottom of the screen.

Are these known issues with the PS3?

Many Thanks.

EDIT: Connected via HDMi.

Sounds like a poor connection or bad cable. Try another cable if you can, if that doesn't solve things take the console back and get it replaced.

Mine does this! I was quite worried because I had the PS3 and TV within a couple of days of each other so didn't know what was at fault. Now that I've had them both over a year I've got to know the pattern. I switch the PS3 and TV on, the TV shows it as HDMI - auto. Then sometime within the first 5-10 minutes, it does just as you decribe and then the TV changes to HDMI - FULL2. It doesn't do it after that. It's the TV swapping modes

a bit more info. Sometimes it will do it 2-3 times all within about 10 seconds but once it's swapped, that's it. Also sometimes, the TV will start off in HDMI - FULL2 straight away, then it doesn't have to swap. Not very often but it does sometimes. I put it down to the fact that the PS3 starts off in 1080p for its menu and then 9/10 times reverts to displaying 720p (regardless off what a game might be rendered in) when you play a game

What TV do you have?

Im running mine through a 4 year old Sony Bravia. May have something to do with it.

I have an Xbox also running through HDMi and that has no issues.

I have a 4 year old Bravia and I have never had the issue you mention, not with a 60gb launch PS3 and not with my new Slim

not sure the exact model. It's a Hitachi 42" LCD 1080p. Had it may/june last year.

My original Panasonic G10 used to do this during MW2. Just flick off and on every now and then. But then that broke (screen cracked, so I reckon it was faulty full stop) and my repaired telly doesn't do it.

There's a few variables but my first stop would be try a different cable.

I had problems with my PS3 a couple of weeks ago but ended up being a dodgy HDMI cable, replace this first before doing anything with the PS3 itself.

I had the exact same thing happen to me and it turned out to be the HDMI Lead, I replace my existing HDMI lead for a new V1.4 HDMI Lead and never had another issue.

My brothers was doing this, pulled the HDMI cable out and plugged it back in again and has been find for more than a year now.

I had the same problem with my old sony bravia kdfe50 but i swapped with my dad for his sanyo when i moved due to size issues and havent had a problem since.

The problem I had with a PS3 was going from a 1080p TV to a only 1080i TV. Because the PS3 was in 1080p mode, the 1080i TV didnt display anything.

I had to go back to the 1080p TV and change the PS3 to 1080i. Worked fine on the 1080i TV after. Its taking far too long for the correct display detection, if working at all.

For the next time: you can reset the settings to 480p/576p by holding down the power button ;)

Thanks for the feedback guys. Seem's that the first thing to do is to swap the HDMi lead out. Will give that a try.

My mate was having similar problems with his new Samsung. Tried my PS3 on his tv a few weeks back with no problems - he picked up a ps3 of his own last weekend.

He tried 3 different cables he had to no avail. Graphical glitches and sometimes it acted as if it had just changed channel. He then tried my cables, and it worked fine.

The only difference is that my cables have those..here we go, I can't remember what you call them...those cylinder shaped things that you get on the end of a ps2 controller or wired 360 controller. Interference dampers or something?

It could be coincidence, but my cables that have them work fine in his setup, whereas his don't. Might be worth keeping in mind when you try another cable. My cables that work are only cheap things as well.

He does run his gear through an Onkyo 5.1 setup though, and only had the problem when doing that.

Mine does the same in a sony bravia. i noticed it mainly happens when switching from 1080 to 720 as the playstation switches on in 1080 and blu rays and everyday use is 1080 but gaming is 720 i think this is suppost to happen

Mine use to do this when I had a 10m HDMI cable without supressors on, changed the cable to a smaller one to test and it worked fine, then went out and bought a 10m one with supressors and it's been fine since. TV is a Sony KDL-40W5500, i've seen quite a few PS3's where HDMI cable makes a difference, my uncle got me a monster hdmi cable and that wouldn't work properly, tried it on sky hd and it had lines running across it, sent it back and bought a cheaper gold plated one and works fine.
