It has been known since E3 that the PS3 will not have HDMI output on the cheaper, 20GB version, but it will have it on the more expensive 60GB version.
What has not been confirmed yet is wether or not the cheaper version will allow you to buy an extra peripheral to have HDMI output. This doesn't matter *too* much, as the component output will output all the same resolutions and standards that HDMI can.
I guess the basic PS3 will come with the multi-AV cable like the 360 uses, with Component, Audio, and Composite, with a SCART block to go with it. Hopefully, for Sonys sake, they'll just allow HDMI with a separate cable type, so basically the cable just doesn't come with the cheapo PS3. We'll have to wait and see for the true answer though.

Shame really. People with no knowledge of HD but do have HD televisions (kids, teenagers) will not see the full potential of the PS3.
Sony's loss.
Well that's the same for any console owner, 360 or PS3. Thing is, the difference between the picture quality compared to HDMI and Component will really not the that great, and most, non-enthusiasts will probably not be able to tell the difference, or even care. As I've said above, it doesn't matter too much about HDMI, as the component cable will output the same stuff for you anyway, just in analogue instead of digital.

Isn't it a generic HDMI port on the back? So sony are going to make a cable to convert HDMI to (probably) composite. Wouldn't it actually be cheaper to just supply a bog standard HDMI cable? I mean they would cost very little for Sony to provide considering their purchasing power.
The original PS3 shown at E3 '05 had 2 HDMI ports at the back, but now the PS3 shown and E3 '06 had the single multi-AV output, so you plug whatever cable, wether RGB, Composite, Component or HDMI into it.
