PS3 doesn't ship with a HDMI cable

Isn't it a generic HDMI port on the back? So sony are going to make a cable to convert HDMI to (probably) composite. Wouldn't it actually be cheaper to just supply a bog standard HDMI cable? I mean they would cost very little for Sony to provide considering their purchasing power.

I'm guessing it comes with a component cable. Which is a bit daft as atm there are no tv's on the market than can handle 1080p over component.

So 95% of users will be 'stuck' with 720p or 1080i... hmmm. sounds familiar.

It has been known since E3 that the PS3 will not have HDMI output on the cheaper, 20GB version, but it will have it on the more expensive 60GB version.

What has not been confirmed yet is wether or not the cheaper version will allow you to buy an extra peripheral to have HDMI output. This doesn't matter *too* much, as the component output will output all the same resolutions and standards that HDMI can.

I guess the basic PS3 will come with the multi-AV cable like the 360 uses, with Component, Audio, and Composite, with a SCART block to go with it. Hopefully, for Sonys sake, they'll just allow HDMI with a separate cable type, so basically the cable just doesn't come with the cheapo PS3. We'll have to wait and see for the true answer though.

Shame really. People with no knowledge of HD but do have HD televisions (kids, teenagers) will not see the full potential of the PS3.

Sony's loss.
Well that's the same for any console owner, 360 or PS3. Thing is, the difference between the picture quality compared to HDMI and Component will really not the that great, and most, non-enthusiasts will probably not be able to tell the difference, or even care. As I've said above, it doesn't matter too much about HDMI, as the component cable will output the same stuff for you anyway, just in analogue instead of digital.

The original PS3 shown at E3 '05 had 2 HDMI ports at the back, but now the PS3 shown and E3 '06 had the single multi-AV output, so you plug whatever cable, wether RGB, Composite, Component or HDMI into it.

Clicking on the "What is the difference" link it lists
The difference between them, however, is that the $599 version system includes HDMI**, Memory Stick/SD/CompactFlash slots, WiFi***

Then goes on to say
**HDMI cable not included

This says to me that there's no HMDI functionality for the $499 version at all. Ergo. no 1080p as long as there's no tv's that support it over component.

Imo though, this is no great loss as 720p/1080i is more than adequate for the majority of people.

I should add the cheapest HDMI cable on Overclockers is http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Video_Cables.html at £30 and I'm not even sure if this is 1.3 one.

The PS3 almost certainly wont use those types of cables, it'll use one with a standard HDMI male head on one end, and the PS3 connection on the other. If they do release it as a cable upgrade for the 20GB PS3 owners, I'd imagine it would be £25-£40 if it's just a cable, maybe more if it's a bit of hardware also.

To be fair the number of different connection types for people to get the best possible signal to their TV is at a high at the moment. The PS3 will need to cater for all of the following imo (from worst to best signal): composite video, composite scart, RGB scart, Component, VGA, HDMI.

Whatever they decide to ship it with the can't please everyone.

Nope its a regular HDMI cable like you would find at home, AFAIK it has 2 video outs, HDMI and a Sony one. the pictures have always shown this on the 60gb model, what we dont have is a pic of the back of the 20gb model

tbh i aint thattttttttt fussed either way as i use my HDMI for my DVD player and only have one HDMI input, so i dont even know if i would use it anyway, though depending on how good the dvd playback is i would maybe use it instead of the DVD player

Ah, I was wrong, apologies. I guess the 20GB version will probably need more than just a cable then, if they were to offer an upgrade of sorts to allow HDMI.

I think in the end the 20 gig will just not be able to use HDMI.

Yep, component is as capable as HDMI with regards screen resolution, just HDMI will have digital elements such as content protection, digital sound integrated into it. In theory you should have a better quality of the HDMI, but I guess it'll depend upon how good the TV is and how good your cables are too.

Which would mean in about 2-3 years time new film releases will probably not playback on it in HD (the studios aren't implimenting the HDCP requirement for HD films with early release but will almost certainly do it sooner rather than later).

Which begs the question (with me at any rate), is the 20gb PS3 a temporary model until they can do a price drop on the full version.

Officially you can do that over component but there are very few tvs that can take a signal this way.

Ahem

This would be a disgrace at the cost their charging, considering a HDMI cable would only set Sony back pennies.

However, folks.....
The reason could be because the PSP is a HDMI 1.3 specification device and therefore probably needs a 1.3 capable cable. Giving possibly (not confirmed) the position of selling a suitable cable or licensing one to a 3rd party manufacturer branded "PS3 compatible" for extra dosh...

Oh and just to correct "Mod" the HDMI could be a lot more superior if combined with a TV that also utilises anything higher than 24bit colour.

HDMI V 1.3 will now support 30-, 36- and 48-bit colour in both RGB and luminance-chrominance (YCbCr) colour spaces, allowing suitably capable screens to show more colours. HDMI 1.3 also supports the next-generation xvYCC colour space.

See the HDMI homepage for full info...

(yes im a smart ass)
