hi

when i watch dvds on my ps3 does it upscale them because ive noticed under ps3 settings there is something called dvd upscaler but its set to off , what does everyone else do with this setting , or has it nothing to do with the upscale of dvds?

cheers

I assumed that this setting needs to be on in order to upscale, mine is on and i certainly think my PS3 is the best picture quality over my 360 and standalone dvd player.

If you switch it on, it will upscale DVDs to 720p or 1080i or 1080p, depending what you have your TV set to. If it's off, you will be watching at SD res of 576p.

ah it must set to off as default then.

my tv does 720p or 1080i but i think i prefer 720p on my display can i ask which setting i need to put it on under the dvd upscale options?

theres : off , double scale , normal or full screen:confused:

cheers

Off = off
Double Scale = dunno, never tried it
Normal = preserves original aspect ratio of video
Full = expands 4:3 to 16:9 if you have a 16:9 TV

Normal is best because if you set it to full it expands 4:3 to fill the screen and it doesnt look right.

Here's the blurb from the online manual -

DVD Upscaler

Adjust settings for upscaled output when playing a DVD. Upscaling is a feature that can be used to enable content recorded at SD resolution (NTSC: 480p / 480i, PAL: 576p / 576i) to be displayed in HD resolution (1080p / 1080i / 720p). Because the video content of commercial DVDs is recorded in SD resolution, higher resolution video can be achieved by enabling upscaled output.
Off Set to disable upscaled output. Double Scale* Set to upscale and display with double horizontal and vertical dimensions without changing the proportions. Normal Set to upscale and display at a size that matches the screen size. Full Screen Set to upscale and display at full screen by changing proportions and stretching the image * This option can be used only when the video output setting of the PS3™ system is set to 1080p or 1080i.

Hints

  • To use this feature, a TV that is compatible with HD input and output must be connected using an HDMI or component AV cable. Also, the video output setting of the PS3™ system must be set to 1080p, 1080i, or 720p.
  • When playing copyright-protected DVD content such as commercially available DVD-Video, an HDMI cable is required to upscale the video content.
  • If image quality is reduced or the image does not look right when upscaled, set this option to [Off].

There's an important point there - you need to be connected with a HDMI cable to upscale DVDs you buy in a shop. Presumably the ones that are Region 2 with Macrovision.

my DVD player has been made redundant since getting the PS3. My DVD player doesn't upscale so the DVDs look great on my SAMMY 32" via PS3.
