PS3 - Fedora Linux installed on a PS3

if they manage to get things like word, a net browser and msn running, compatible with a USB printer, id heavily consider it, just to have everything out of one box

The only things I can see as problems with that are word and msn on linux - I havent looked into if they are supported - but usb printing isnt any issue in linux and neither is browsing www

You can get openoffice on linux which is mostly compatible with word documents so that's sorted. For MSN there's GAIM and some others too. Plus there's always web messenger.

I think this is a very good reason to own a PS3, I've used linux (Gentoox) on XBOX and although a little slow (XBOX only has 64mb of ram) it was very usable and open office is not only very good its also free :)

Imagine what could be done a PS3 with Linux. It all sounds very exciting to me :)

It's not circumstancial at all, it was defined by courts in the US (which will be upheld here)

There's no reason why a US court decision would have a bearing on a UK case.

You can barely talk about anything on here anymore without breaking some rule or other. It's a shame really as i beleive OcUK is shooting itself in the foot as in my case i've been visiting other forums because of the stringent rules and policing.

And on these other forums i've found not only far more freedom of speech but other places that sell hardware, and for the first time in 6 years i've done my big £1200 upgrade somewhere other than OcUK.

It's a bit sad really cos these forums used to be great :(

I sincerely hope i'm not breaking another rule saying this.

Peace..

I know nothing about Linux, but I get the feeling I'll be learning.
I think this is a very clever coup by Sony, not only for the homebrew potential, but bringing an Microsoft's closest rival PC OS to (potentially) millions of people who would otherwise never looked into it, which is a clear two fingers up at Microsoft.

Since it's fixed spec the distro providers can have all the necessary drivers and stuff pre-installed, so it will be easy for most people to use. I found the difficult with linux was the initial set up and finding all the drivers and software you need.
The trouble with that is that tacking proprietary kernel modules on to the kernel taints it and destroys its GPL compatibility. It's illegal to distribute a tainted kernel. That's the reason why Kororaa was taken offline, it shipped with ATi and nVidia proprietary graphics drivers.

You can do whatever you want with it once its yours.

I'm not really up to speed exactly on the rules regarding open source licenses. Are you saying you're not allowed to distribute a version of linux with drivers built in? Or are you saying the drivers would have to open sourced too?

You seriously picked a shop based on its forums?

I didn't say other shop forums i just meant other general forums where people openly discuss best prices and experiences with other etailers.

you see thats the problem if people can't talk openly (within reason) here they will just tire of it and seek out new forums where they can and will possibbly end up being recomended other etailers.

I think we just a need bit of sensibility on BOTH sides really, we all know other etailers exist and not seeing them mentioned on here is hardly going to erase them from our minds. So i can't see the problem in saying Gameplay as GoW for £37.99, but on the other hand you shouldn't be able to say Gameplay as a mouse for £4.99 as OcUK sell mice but not GoW.

Well i have to say I belive the video might be a fake. The mouse cursor was moving much to nicely for it to be done from a controller.

Also when loads this other OS the screen goes black and then the kernel starts, there, and during the linux demo cant show its running on the PS3, other than showing My Computer with some drives with Sony init.

While it may be true then so be it, but im just a bit sceptical about it

The drivers that ship with the kernel have to be open source too. Open source drivers are available for most graphics chipsets but since they are reverse-engineered they are significantly lacking in performance in comparison to their proprietary, in-house-developed counterparts.

Ok well if Sony are supporting it they could make the drivers and open source them. Not sure they would be willing to do that though.

Definitely not. That would make it far too easy for enthusiasts like us to run emulators on it. I do think that someone will hack together drivers for it, perhaps from nVidia's OS X drivers.

Surely there is going to have to be some level of driver support from SONY as the Linux implimentation is supposedly supported. There is only one display driver required, that of the onboard graphics card.

Yeah the whole point is that Sony want us to be able to run our own stuff on it. If they are going to support linux on the PS3 they are going to have to provide drivers.

Seems a brave move by sony considering the implications of it being hacked to play copied games.

On the other hand we could see some really interesting projects being developed for it.

I personally wouldn't use it though, not until it's a seamless transition between OS's. That looked a bit "tacked" on for my liking.
