PS3 Firmware 2.5 & PSP Firmware 5.0 is out

Bloody hell, i only dragged my brothers PS3 into my room yesterday to update it and now there's another one, so i have to do mine and do his again!

Downloading now too...

Updated :)

Edit - I was under the impression that you could have the console switch off after a download had finished? The only options I see are to have it switch off after a set time (e.g. 1 hour) of inactivity

Better than nothing, but still seems to be a big omission, unless I'm missing something?

EDIT 2 - ah, you have to do it via the XMB...

Background Downloading - You now have the option to set the PS3 to turn off automatically after a background download or installation of content has completed. This option is available when you turn off the system from the button under [Users] while content is being downloaded or installed.

Seems a bit daft having 2 different methods. Normally I switch off using the PS button on the pad, they should have put the option on there too.

Been waiting all night for this. Just about to go to bed and then read this thread. Typical!

Seems like a nice update :)

I've been doing some reading, looks like its up to the game developers to put the magic keystrokes in to take screenshots :(

Guess we will have to wait for our favourite games to get patched.

Well, initial impressions are pretty good I've got to say. The trophy features, store and browser all 'feel' quicker. Particularly noticeable when comparing trophies, I'll make a point of trying whilst in a game later, as that's when it was really slow.

The new player 'level' symbols are nice too, but I guess it depends if you're a trophy whore or not :P

And yes, I can confirm that Flash 9 works :D

When you say Flash 9 works, do you mean in the internet browser?

EDIT: Nevermind, just followed the link and this is the case.

I'm unimpressed tbh. While things like power saving are nice they really should have been there from launch, improve trophy comparisons are ok i guess but it appears the level symbol takes ages to change, i'm level 5 and it's still the same which basically means that i bet 90% of people with PS3s have the same symbol as i rarely see anyone with a level higher than 5. They STILL haven't implemented the only two things i want, cross game invites and cross game voice chat, maybe one day i guess. The implementation of improved chat quality for the official headset is nice enough, but it still doesn't fix the fact that 90% of people using blutooth headsets are inaudible.

So that improvement is only for the official headset? That's annoying.

Looks that way... mind you I was only using a mediocre bluetooth jabra... so maybe now is the time to get myself an official one so I can swap my jabra back to my phone and enjoy good quality shinanigans when LBP comes out :D

The cross game stuff seems to be things included in home, so i would guess that all these will also be implemented in the Firmware when home is out.

As long as i can invite people in game without having to quit then i'm happy so i pray you are right :)

What exactly do you mean by invite ingame - invite people to a game your hosting or invite to a game your participating in?

You can do the first already in some games, and if thats what you mean it isn't something which is suddenly going to appear in a firmware update or 'Home' for all games. If Sony do add/extend this functionaility in future it will be up to the developers to either implement it into their games or patch it into existing ones. This is the same for any 'Home' features, games will need to be patched to take advantage of it.

Playstation Store is even quicker than it was before now!!! Menus zip through, multiple images load per second, and A-Z and category listings? (not sure if they were already on EU store or not).

Account Management redesign is nice (but apart from the niceness it is very fast).

hope NXE is this fast, biggest problem with Dashboard has always been the relatively low speed of the interface. Marketplace was faster than PSN before, then PSN got better thumbnails to make it faster, now it leave Marketplace in it's dust.

Used the new "last signed in info" to delete some people of my friends list (which is exactly what I use the 360 feature for :), not logged on for 2 months, probably ain't got a console no more so get off my list!)

Set my controller to turn off, left PS3 to manual.

Haven't noticed anything else obvious that has changed.

Edit: Scene search in videos is awesome, but I knew it would be as it has been on PSP for ages now. Great for any non DVD video as it lets you in effect create chapters to skip through.

I want it so i can access the in game xmb, point at a friends profile and select an invite option. This will then send an alert to said friend who can then accept the invite, this will quit out of their current game and once the relevant disk is inserted the game will start and auto-join the server they were invited to.

While i can see this may require patching for older games i fail to see why it's impossible, it's going to require less effort to implement than the in-game XMB took. Even if it was a feature only available for patched or new games i would be happy, it's the fact that the XMB currently offers no form of invites for developers to work with, even though the in game music app isn't ever used i'm not annoyed as at least Sony have offered it as a feature to devs.
