PS3 Firmware Update tomorrow

The Resistance 2 Update is online now. 304mb patch.

Resistance 1 meltdown mode implemented and thegame might put you into a currently running game instead of starting fresh (which im finding annoying).

Fingers crossed for MKV support :D

I have hundreds of MKVs on my server, and all play through the PS3 fine.

They've all been run through MKV2VOB of course, but none of them ever needed transcoding, just a quick demux/remux, takes less than a minute.

Although Naitive MKV support would be nice, because obviously it can play the files, I'm not that fussed. There's not even the old problem of having the files named .mp4 any more. Ever since firmware 2.53, you can name them .MPG and the PS3 will play them fine. From a USB device, disk, or streaming.

Literally hundreds of TV eps in 720p MKV here, and never had one that needed to be transcoded, and never had one that wouldn't play. The PS3 also does a better job of playing these MKV files than VLC did on the same display.

Vin.

(Still, I'm not arguing, support "out of the box" would be very nice, but I'm just saying it's no real hardship to run them through MKV2VOB.)

mvktovob is no good for subtitles though, it has to transcode in order to hard code them into the file. Mkv support would eliminate that annoyance.

That's a fair comment.

However does the PS3 support subtitles at all?
I've never checked?

Can it play DivX subtitle files?

If so, more clever than I thought.

But yes, of course naitive MKV support would be best of all anyway, I was just trying to point out that MKV files can otherwise be played... but no, fair enough, no subs!

Vin.

Changes in the up-coming Resistance 2 patch:

Then we have patch 1.50, or what some on the MyResistance.net forums have been calling the “the big patch.” And it definitely lives up to that nickname—it’s quite substantial. Once you install the patch (the download prompt will come up automatically once you start R2), you’ll now be treated to:

Meltdown Mode: We’ve read the message-board comments. We’ve seen the online petition. You want it? You got it! Patch 1.50 brings back Meltdown, the popular Resistance: Fall of Man multiplayer mode in which each team attempts to gain control of the map by capturing beacons.

Superhuman Co-op Mode: Does your eight-man Specter squad possess the skills to survive this all-new difficulty? It features stronger enemies and disables auto-respawning (only another squadmate can revive you), but dishes out bigger rewards (double the Grey Tech and XP per round).

Second PSN Login Support: Your fellow couch potato can now save their character’s multiplayer progress, thanks to the added option to log in with two unique PSN accounts.

The superhuman co-op mode sounds like fun! Would love to play Orick on this mode. Might even pull me off KZ2 to finally max out my Spec-ops character with the new additional 30% XP in co-op mode combined with the superhuman difficulty :D

Holy smokes! 304MB!!

Downloaded it in about 3 mins so not too bad actually.

Guest sign in or alternate PSN ID thing works and is good but my "allies" tab doesn't seem to load anymore! Going to try restarting it and see what happens...

edit: nope, still broken! :( Anyone else getting the same issue?

edit2: just checked myresistance.net and it seems this is a known problem and I am not alone! Oh dear! Not as major a mess up as The Fallout 3 "The Pitt" Shenanigans but still!! Come on!! :(
