PS3 for £299 ?

The 40GB version has been rumoured for a few weeks.
However, I can't see the point of a stripped down version.
Besides, it certainly won't 'combat' sales of the Halo 3, Sony need a killer game and until that happens, it's a case of laughing all the way to the bank for MS.

Great, no backwords ps2 or 1 capabilities, and no sync controllers thing. Cool...

Good price, id buy one (well when MGS4 comes out anyway) but only if its the full thing.
 
This is becoming a bit of a joke now, 3 version of the 360 (4 if the arcade one is true) and now 3 different type of ps3, it hasn’t been out a year!

I’m no manufacturing expert but wouldn’t they be better making more of the same unit in order of getting the price of manufacturing down and there for getting the price of the unit down, instead of making a different version with less bits/capability in it.


Tho I don’t think the Sky news thing is true the backwards capabilities of the ps3 are now all software they aren’t losing any money by putting it in there.
 
Take away the backwards compatibility for a console seriously lacking in games, when its predecessor possibly has the greatest ever games catalog.

I wouldnt even consider buying a PS3 untill it was 299 or under for the full version. Blu Ray alone isnt worth the price tag, especially with the 1 or 2 worthwhile games on it at best :/
 
a cheaper one to produce makes sense - without usb ports though, nahhh cant see it (this cant add too much to the cost anyway so why it would make it drastically cheaper is beyond me) especially as they are required for controllers not to mention probably other things coming out.

LBP, Home, GT5 Prologue, not to mention all the others due before Xmas will attract a lot more potential customers (not to mention thats its that season anyway)

BR is only not worth it to those who havent actually tried it (some of the media isnt any more expensive than premium sd sale on the street, so even the price doesnt matter) not suggesting people will rush out and replace their dvd's they already own, but for new simultaneous releases I think it certainly makes sense,
 
Any new PS3 because of bluetooth has to go through FCC authorisation first and I'm sure I've seen the documents somewhere for this and it does have USB sockets.
 
My opinion is Sony are flooding the market with rumours of an imminent cheaper model to try and stop people buying 360s. We've had 20G, 40GB and 80GB dropping $100 rumours for months all from media outlets with 'anonymous insider sources' and none of them have remotely been true. Is it cooincidence this latest 'cheapest yet' rumour has popped up in Halo 3 week? If there was a price drop for christmas it would have been announced at TGS.

The truth is Sony just can't afford to drop the PS3 price any time soon. The 60GB price drop was just to shift some units that had sat in inventory from launch. The price is already subsidised and isn't really that bad if you want a console/Blu-Ray player; it's only seen as expensive by people who just want to play games (The vast majority).

Probably not about cost, and more so making the lower model stripped of any nice things to make you want the higher spec one.

True, but I would feel that was a daft move unless it was upgradable. (e.g. if you started with a Core 360, you could upgrade with Hard Disk later..)

Although, they could always put the Backwards Compatibility software on PSN to buy...
 
Sony wouldnt remove USB from the PS3 if this cut down version does come out. How would anyone be able to charge their PS3 controllers? Im sure the last time I did a firmware update on my PS3, unless I connect a controller through USB the update doesnt start.
