PS3 for £299 ?

The 40gb one (if released) will be the same as the normal unit with a smaller HDD. They will not remove wifi/usb/card reader etc. They already tried this and realised it wasn't a success. At present there is only 1 model available of the PS3 in terms of features. As far as I can see the only difference would be HDD size, but I dunno how that would reduce the price drastically.

This version without USB sounds like a news organization who doesn't understand what a PS3 is have confused. You can't have a PS3 without USB as the controllers require it to sync when you first buy it.
I reckon a 40gb will appear in USA for xmas at $399 which is what all the rumours have been. No idea where this second rumour about it being Europe bound and losing USB/wifi etc has come from.

The backwards compatibility surely refers to them using software emulation as opposed to hardware emulation, and is again confused.

not plugged my ps3 pad in via usb since the first time i opened the box, and ive updated formware about 3 times since then...

I think you haven't needed the USB to sync after a firmware update since 1.92 update.

I believe you may well be spot on, sir.

Theyve already removed the backwards compatibility (emotion engine)

The current backwards workings are software, I.E you download software and the CELL does the work decoding the games, so it doesnt cost anything (apart from maybe hard drive space) so its pointless 'removing' it, unless they just stop the software working on the new one, claim its a new 'budget' model, even though its the same just crippled so they can add a new budget line which hopefully more people would buy (altho pointless as it will cost the same to produce)

No USB ports is pointless, if you cant use controllers its never going to happen, and how much does a USB port cost? 125 quid extra? There not going to just remove them and charge 299

A 40gb option may be an idea but then again, whats the price difference between a 40G and a 60G hard drive? Pennies, maybe a couple of pounds on a good day, in the UK the best I can see is 300 for a 40GB, no base pack games (motorstorm, RFOM), no extra controller, maybe no smart card ports (like the old 20GB) altho i doubt thats going to happen

I think the reduced cost is more to do with outsourcing much of the process now ie to Foxcon and asustek. Perhaps this 40Gb wont have the media ports ? Cant see much else being removed though , apart from the chrome trim around the drive ;)

aye the only things they can remove without cripping it beyond belief, however, the 60GBs value would crash over night if they did drop it to 300, do you think anyone would pay 125 quid for 20gb more hard drive (neglidable) and a card reader (usb one for a fiver) and a chrome tray (well ok some might pay for this :P )

How - I cant get anything to work (either remote or controller) wirelessly during a firmware update

I only did 1.92 - 1.93 upgrade at the weekend and it still wouldnt do anything wirelessly. No button or stick reacted until I was phyically connected.......wierd

No surprise really, I mean how can removing USB and reducing HD size a bit save them £125?

£300 price tag would be really sweet though would sell a bucketload at christmas at that price.

I thought it looked bull too, I mean surely changing a design would cost more this far into manufacturing. Even if it means removing features. Suprised people believed it tbf :D

I agree with you usb ports will save them next to nothing and the difference in h/drive sizes is only a small saving.
As for saving on no backwards compatability the eu consoles do this via software emulation anyway so there is no saving there either.

Sony denying it means nothing, they did the same with $100 price drop, pretty much the same as Microsoft did with the price drops in the US and Europe. Makes sense to me not to tell everyone if they wait 2 months and they get a cheaper model, as most will wait the 2 months. Same thing happened with the PSP lite this month, the sales dropped off big style up to the release of the PSP lite, which shot up again after its release.

Shame that we wont see a cheaper PS3.

I hope there will be some very good deals leading up to christmas I would be in the market to get one shortly after I get my new LCD TV.
