With what seems to be an ever more regular occurance on PS3 games using a chunk of your Hard-drive for storage and GT5P using a reported 5Gig this made me decide to go with an external drive and use my internal 60GB only for games.

New 40GB owners are soon going to run into storage problems with games and demos alone if this continues....

Ive orderd one of the following to use with a IBM 2.5" 250GB

All comes to approx £90 with shipping but this is a portable drive enclosure which also runs from batteries if required. Kinda neat an easily moved to other locations. Anyone got one?

Is this storage issue becoming a more common experience for you guys and for those of you that have already replaced your HDD can you arrange your files of music/videos in any better way on a seperate drive as Sonys folder options on the internal are rather imited.

Yes you can setup folders on the External ( I used my PC to do so ) and then these will show up on the PS3.

I have an internal 120gig and an external 120gig .... this was foreseen awhile ago.

On a external drive all your folders will appear like they do on your PC. For example, if you copy your music to the PS3 (because there simply is no 'sort by filename' option) you end up with files/folders all over the place, this doesn't happen with a USB drive, thank god.

So its possible to lets say have genre and personal file sorting?

Audio = Pop / Rock / Dance / Soundtrack / Podcast / 5.1

Video = HDTV / DVD / Divx

Please say yes....

I hate PS3 endless scrolling and no folder creation/sorting

Yes, Just as you would on your PC :)

Thanks guys

Though i suppose album art isnt possible is it?
Funny videos allow video sample thumbnails created ( i assume this is still possible on a portable drive too?)

No you cant have thumbnails of videos on your external drive, but I think album art is fine.

Would you recommend a ax200 to go along with my ps3?

Yes its a superb projector, look on AVF though, big thread on it there.
Should be available for under £800 now?

Yeah I am a member of AVF and seen a lot of good things about the ax200 in that thread .... just a shame I won't have it in time for next week:(

" it will be mine, oh yes .. it will be mine " ( around july :D )

I have a 160Gb drive in my PS3 and an external 2.5" 250GB Freecom drive. I found that I have ran short on space very quickly on the PS3 though and I use my external for storing PC files as well as PS3/PSP stuff so space on there is limited too. When PlayTV comes out I will no doubt need more storage space, plus HD movie content is taking up loads of space and as Mr Latte says HDD installs are becoming more and more common.

I have been toying with the idea of buying an external 3.5" caddie and popping a 1TB drive in it - then using this as the PS3's primary drive - I need to find a caddie which nicely compliments the PS3 though!

I'll be throwing in a 320GB drive from my Mac Pro for this very reason.

I need to do a format and restore anyway, so this is the perfect opportunity :cool:

I also have a external 120Gb drive but the PS3 doesnt seem to be able to read stuff from it. Is it possible that the PS3 doesnt supply enough power to power a 2.5" HDD?
