PS3 good for watching DVD's on?

I use mine through HDMI and have to say that it's surprisingly bad. I'm not sure what the technical terminology is, but there were those lines across the screen and frames were hanging about (tearing?) and the picture quality was generally questionable. It looked noway near as good as my upscaling DVD player.

What?! :p

Seriously, it has already been proven that the Ps3 has high performance DVD quality playback...

There are vast options within the PS3 for cranking up/adjusting the playback settings for DVDs etc, they look superb! :p

Had a mess about with it last night and realised that I didn't actually have the upscaling turned on.

It does look much better now, thanks guys.

It still doesn't look as good as my upscaling DVD player though.

Are you running in 1080i by any chance? Sounds like your describing the artifacts you get when running interlaced resolutions.

EDIT: Nevermind, I didn't see your above post.

Before the PS3 was out in the UK I bought a 40" HD TV in preparation for the incoming console. I read it was a DVD player but at the time it didn't upscale DVDs so bought a Sony 720P upscaling DVD play for the new TV. Then a few months later bought a PS3 and two Blu-Rays and haven't bought a DVD since ;) Later on via a firmware update the 1080P upscaling was added so I sold the DVD player as the PS3 did a better job, but it was louder....so now I have a slim and happy all round.

I watched Children of Men on DVD the other night (PS3 upscaled to 1080i), and it looked almost as good as Blu-ray.

Love it :D
