PS3 + GTA4 problem...

I've got this aswell. Really annoying it appparently only happens when your single player game reaches around 25-30%. Some people have copied their save file onto a pen drive and then deleted it from the console.

They better patch this soon.

I just disabled the network connection in network settings and it was fine. Please don't go deleting game saves or game data...

It's been happening with me since the first time I saved a game, just after I arrived in Liberty City (so barely 1% complete).

I kept having to delete my saves and just tool around trying not to get into the story so that I wouldn't have to start again. Disabling internet access has the desired effect though so I can play the game properly now.

I know that problems do happen but some clear advice from Rockstar would have been the least they could do, instead of having to spend hours trawling user forums

I'm having the same problem and just wondering if returning the disks and getting a new one will do any good as i know people with the same version of the PS3 who aren't having any problems (yet).

Really disappointed overall, i can't even create a new game file while connected to the PSN network.
I might just return the game and get it on the xbox :(

Has happened to me since having a go online, signing out of PSN and then loading the game works for me. Although signing into PSN whilst on GTA to play multiplayer resulted in the game freezing.

I'm quite interested in how such a savage bug made it past testing?

Maybe they let it slip hopig that most people would be distracted enough by the story not to notice until they could patch it.

I really reckon that since a release is no longer final with the advent of patches on consoles that developers are slacking on polishing off a 'final version'.

Known issue on both versions but is more common on the ps3, the game has quite a few bugs, if this had come out for a console that couldn't be updated i would have been heading back to the shops for a refund.

Same problem here, hopefully it will be sorted soon.
Mine wouldnt start the first time I actually loaded it on single player, had to disable PSN auto sign-in to get the game to actually load.

I deleted the Profile save from the PS3 menu and loaded the game while connected to PSN, it worked and didnt even freeze.

I cant be 100% sure if doing this cured my issue, but ive not had any grief so far after 2 hours of play.

Not sure how true but found this:

"Just got off the phone with T2 support. The issue that is causing the freezing is actually two separate issues. One is the network problem that the newer PS3's are encountering however the older model, launche units are experiencing an entirely different problem. The launch version of PS3's used a different chip that could run PS2 and PS1 games without emulation. This chip is conflicting with the game code and cause GTA4 to freeze. The T2 representative told me that the fix will indeed not be exclusively in the form of a patch. There will probably be a patch for the issues relating to the network and things that the newer PS3's are facing however.. the older launch 60GB versions and possibly the 20gb, i didnt ask, will require a firmware upgrade that will allow GTA4 to run on the older chip. This firmware upgrade, he said, could be available anytime between tomorrow morning and "as soon as possible" as he put it. The issue is deffinately being adressed and it seems as though they have found what the problem is. So guys lets hope this works and spread this around because this came directly from my 25 minute conversation with T2 support that I just got finished with."

Haven't they done any testing of the game?

Surely with all the time spent on developing the game they would have found out a 60GB model will cause lockups?

I have a 60GB one and lockups, disabling network solved it for me, now that should not have helped if the issue is the 60GB chip.

As for the steps of uninstalling, deleting savegames etc... do not do it, it does not help, only disabling network or PSN will work.
