Hello all,

Can anyone recommend a good PS3 hard drive (Sata 2.5") please?

I'm looking for a 160GB or 250GB if the price isn't that much more expensive. Does the drive speed make a big difference for the PS3 when accessing files?

Thanks.

Prolly get more replies to this thread in the console section but I can help you out. :)

Just look at any drive... it is recommened that you stick to a 54000rpm drive because of noise and the extra heat that a 7200rpm drive would produce.

Hitachi and Toshiba both make good 2.5" drive.

As said above, the recommendation is to stick with 5400rpm drives.
It can be quite difficult keeping things cool and Sony obviously designed the PS3 with 5400rpm units in mind.

I personally decided that if I was going to do it I'd do it right.
So I slammed in a 320GB WD Scorpio.
Very quiet.

The 7200rpm units generate more heat and so the PS3 is required to do more to keep everything cool.
Those running 7200rpm units find that the cooling fans are constantly on which generates a fair amount of noise.

As you gain next to nothing by using a 7200rpm drive you might just as well stick to 5400rpm and definitely not have any thermal issues as opposed to "probably wont".

ive seen virtually no reports of such issues. the temperature increase is literally 1-2c.

i dont care what drives peopel use, but it makes me laugh when people come up with rubbish like 'sony obviously designed them with 5200rpm drives in mind". of course they didnt. if that was the case sony would tell you not to use 7200rpm drives in the manual.
