I've been looking at PS3s and as they are not yet classed as 'retro' are still dirt cheap. I see there are a few models and was looking at a slim 250GB, model CECH-2003B.
This can run HAN or CFW (if I desire) hopefully is less prone to overheating / breaking than the fat original models but build quality is better than the super slim which being plastic puts me off a bit.

Any recommendations? It's primarily for Minecraft and maybe some 2 player games for me and my girlfriend, like Virual Tennis series which I love

If you can get the original fat ps3 60gb it is fully hardware backward compatible with ps1 and ps2. Other models had software emulation, this model has actual hardware. I was gutted when mine died a few years ago.

Thanks, I ended up getting a 250GB slim (2003B)
As much as the backward compatible hardware in the fat models interests me, the failing hardware does not! Also, from what I understand all PS3 models can play PS1 games natively and ISOs of PS1 and PS2 if jailbroken. I'll probably end up running the standard firmware and playing a handful of games only. PS3 will be considered retro in not so many years so guess now is the time to buy whilst they're dirt cheap. The one I got looks to be in great condition, though un-boxed

I've got three, an original BC model, an original 80gig, and a Slim, but still want one of the Super Slim models - the blue one looks great!

The original shape PS3 is my favourite looking console ever

I've got the earlier Slim model (the one with the illuminated buttons), it works well and is very quiet. I stuck a cheap SATA SSD in there too because the HDD was occasionally making a worrying clicking/head park noise, doesn't do a huge amount for load times but it's something.

I do miss my original 40GB fat one though, it was a bit of a behemoth but I loved it. Unfortunately it suffered with the dreaded YLOD, and although I was able to get it working again using a heatgun it was only for long enough to get my saves etc off it. I do still have it somewhere so maybe I'll give it another go one day.

Worth picking up a PS3 move with camera? I did buy a prestine looking copy of Sports Champions yesterday for a whole £1, which is supposed to be quite good

Support for PS1 games in PS3 is not native as in hardware, but emulated. It's ok, but it's not as good as original hardware or even the PS2 (which some are full original hardware, others partial emulated I think). One major issue is lack of 240p support on the PS3. Your PS1 games will be output at 480i (if using analogue connections) or upscaled (relatively poorly) to 480p or higher depending on your resolution on the HDMI output. I've also noticed on the 'twitchier' games, there is more issues with latency versus original hardware of course.

I've also tried patching in PS2 support on my Super-Slim PS3 but again, it's emulated and to be honest, worse than just connecting up a PS2 or getting one (they are also just about staying cheap, starting to go up). The PS2 emulator solution isn't perfect and also does some kind of dynamic resolution scaling which looked really bad on my flat panel.

I've gone with the following:

- PS1 Original hardware soft-modded with tonyhax/freepsxboot. Hoping some of the ODE solutions get cheaper as that laser isn't going to last forever.
- PS2 'Fat' with a SATA adapter and an old DVR 500GB HDD running FreeMCBoot and OPL to play my backup games. This gets used by far the most.
- PS3 Super-Slim on stock firmware (tried HeN and it was fine but didn't use any of the functions in the end so went back).

The PS1 and PS2 are connected to a 4:3 21" Trinitron CRT via RGB and are glorious. Loving going back and playing thorough some of my childhood favourites again. The PS3 was also connected to that but on balance the PS3 is better on a nice flat panel via HDMI, so it's connected to my LG OLED along with the PS4 Pro and it looks great on that. Many PS3 games are widescreen optimised and text is often not readable on a CRT.

The only thing I'd say about PS3 is that it's probably the worst generation of PS for performance (on balance, I know PS1 games are mostly 30FPS or lower). The image quality on that generation of games isn't great, lots of bloom, weird shading effects (many games are yellow/brown for some reason) and most games don't run at either the native 1080p that could be supported OR 60FPS. I find myself playing most of the big games of that generation on PC instead, and using the PS3 for titles such as Gran Turismo 5/6, Red Dead Redemption and Ridge Racer 7. I would recommend Ridge Racer 7 as it actually runs 1080p 60FPS and looks good still. One of the few on PS3. That said, there is still a huge, very cheap library to choose from so I'm sure you could find some good games.

Not sure about the state of getting hold of extra PS3 Controllers - most, like PS2, are getting quite old and there are no good new 3rd party ones I've tried. Fortunately my PS3 is one of the newest, so controller and battery still going strong, but something to also consider. Not sure if there are solutions to get PS4 ones to work or something.

Not worth the hassle getting hold of PS3 controllers, most are either fakes missing functionality or the originals and well worn.

I got a Brooks Wingman XE adapter as I find I still use my PS3 slim a fair amount and it works perfectly with a PS4 controller (you can even get into the recovery menu with it).

It's pricier than other adapters but it's continually updated and everything works (motion, rumble etc), in addition I can use my 360/XBox One controllers as well on the PS or the Xbox (including the Series X and PS5, though I've not tried those yet).

My new hobby is fixing old broken PS3 fats from eBay. They are a thing of beauty in my opinion and so cheap i dont mind the risks of de-lidding them and changing the caps etc. Its a brilliant feeling when they boot up again. My latest fix was an £9 bargain as it still had a ps1 copy of Silent Hill stuck in the drive along with a childs hairclip :)
I then sold the disc on eBay for £37 lol.

Great work! You should share one of your repairs on here

My PS3 slim 250GB arrived yesterday.
Console itself is very clean with only a few marks. All working great so far

The PS3 pad start button is broken along with the left analogue stick so contacted seller and he refunded me £20 which wasnt bad.
I've bought another identical to my genuine Sony CECHZC2E A1 (Duel shock 3) This one was my dads which I took apart to confirm it was genuine, which it is.
It seems to be a minefield buying DS3 pads so i'll weight this one when it arrives and if it feels off I unscrew it to confirm. Battery is usually the dead giveaway if its fake or not.

I then proceeded to login to PSN and topped up my account which I needed to do with a Playstation store gift card from Amazon with a whole £5. Then purchased Virtua Fighter 2.
VF2 fired it up and working wonderfully, even online mode where I played a random person.
PS3 move motion controllers and camera are arriving today

For £138.96 inc delivery I got the following, console came with 3 games, others I bought separate.
The Move bundle I also bought separate and was a big chunk of the cost, but fanied playing something like Sports Champions and Portal 2 with the girlfriend. They still sell quite well because I think they can be used on PS4, maybe 5 too?
Pretty sure the PS3 will be considered "Retro" in a few years and no doubt it'll got from costing peanuts to £500 for a fully working, good condition one

I have a ps3 on an old telly for streaming and the controller wont charge at all but works fine on USB.

You seem knowledgeable. How easy would it to be fix? Or should I just buy a new one from cex? Probably ideally like to do both as I'd have two controllers then

It’s probably the Li-ion battery that’s gone. I’m not going to lie, controllers are a pig to re-assemble. There are quite a few parts and it can get a bit fiddly. Even unscrewing the 4 / 5 screws is fiddly to line up the dual shock motors and L1/R1 L2/R2.

This one is the one with knackered start button and broken left analogue. (Non dual shock 3)
I started cleaning parts but then gave up re-assembling as the analogue stick is broken anyway. Start may have just been the contact.
It rattled because there were also some broken clips (which made things harder to re-assemble)

@Simon0001 what controller do you have? I could send you the battery from mine if you want to attempt taking it apart. I'll fish it out the bin in case :) The dual shock controllers you a bigger battery

PS noob question... Instead of playing all games from the disks, can they not be installed to the PS3 hard drive?

Searching youtube, the only vids I can find relate to having a jailbroken PS3 to install games?! Seems daft really as it would save the laser in the long run. PC games can be installed and played from hdd so why not console games I own?
I don't want to go down the route of jailbreaking but if Multiman and HEN/CFW are the only way to install my disk owned games then I'll probably do that

From a technical perspective, sure. But at the time the PS3 was out, having the physical disk was the easiest and most fool proof way of guaranteeing you own the game.
