PS3 in 2022?

The PS3 never allowed this - it will install some data from the Blu-ray to the HDD but the only way you can put a full title on to the HDD is if you buy it digitally from the PSN Store. Again, it was XBox who had that option, you could install the whole disc to the HDD as long as it was present in the drive when the game launched.

Changing the battery alone isn't too bad if I recall, I did mine ages back for a higher-capacity one bought from eBay.

PS noob question... Instead of playing all games from the disks, can they not be installed to the PS3 hard drive?

Searching youtube, the only vids I can find relate to having a jailbroken PS3 to install games?! Seems daft really as it would save the laser in the long run. PC games can be installed and played from hdd so why not console games I own?
I don't want to go down the route of jailbreaking but if Multiman and HEN/CFW are the only way to install my disk owned games then I'll probably do that

No, at best games on disc would partially install data to the HDD but they'd still load from the discs too, unlike the PS4/PS5. Have to remember the early models launched with 40GB HDDs (and some with 20GB) so some games would've filled the disk, if they'd fit at all.

i did have a ps3 but the games looked dated now. the ps4 games can be had cheap enough these days and i still enjoy using a ps4 slim.

the slim versions and later revisions are the ones to get though

Another thing that's somewhat surprising looking back on it now, is that many games aren't (and never were) available digitally on the PS Store at all. I don't *think* GTA4 is on there, for example. There's quite a few games that would've probably benefitted from a full HDD install.

I loved the PS3 at the time but going back to it now, there are so many odd things about it and design decisions that don't make sense.

I do wish it still had the game launch chime though:

I’ve been playing Virtua fighter 2 on PSN ranked mode and so far it looks and works great. Some people tend to disconnect, I think when they see ive played 5 games, to their 25000 :D
Girlfriend was on Minecraft last night for an hour or so.
Just finished playing someone from Japan on VF2 for around an hour, we ended up chatting briefly after the game. That alone has made the console purchase worthwhile and glad I didnt bother jailbreaking it seems as both PSN for PS3 and the online community is still alive :)

I've dug my PS3 out to play some of my PS+ games I saved over the years like the MGS collection and Prototype. And GT6 although that took a full morning to download and install it's updates in game.

To be honest I feel the 360 has aged much better in terms of UI speed and controllers that use AA batteries (and there are third party options on eBay).

It's really painful using a PS3 now. If only Sony could get those games running natively on a PS5... *sigh*

Why?
I've completed 2 games on now and had no problems streaming

Using PS Now is fine. Using the PS3 console itself which takes an aeon to install/patch and even remove games. No thanks.

But PS Now doesn't have some of the games I own on PS3 like Prince of Persia, Splinter Cell, Resistance, etc.

It looks like you can still get games on your PS3 HDD if you get the digital version. It seems that Sony have made it a little more difficult to do. Has anyone done this recently?
