Parents jsut agreed tog et me a ps3 for my bday, making me very very happy :) Now, I need your help to get some info about it because google is taking time :p

First off, the different kinds of ps3. Which is the best bet between the 40gb, 60gb, and the 80gb one?
Second, is the 80gb one being released in the UK anytime soon? or is it already and i'm blind?
Third, are all the games region free? So if I buy the PS3 in the US, which is a lot cheaper, and bring it over here, can I still buy the games in the UK and play them on it without hassle?

Thank you :)

The best bet at the moment is to get a 60 Gb PS3, the 80Gb has not been announced for the UK and the only difference is a larger hard disk, which can replace with any 2.5" sata anyway. I would advise not to get the 40Gb at present as the 60Gb although £50 more comes with at least 2 games and some places even have better offers.
If you search the forum there was a thread a while back asking pretty much the same questions have a look, but ignore the fanboy comments from both sides of the fence. Also take a look at the PS3 Faqs as it answers a few questions in there regarding Region free gaming (which all games on PS3 are at present) and some other things you may want to know.

Found the link for the thread for you,

You'll want the 60gb model as it offers the best value for money as you can play PS2 games on it (which you can't on the 40gb), you'll get 4 USB ports (rather than 2) and a multi-format card reader.

80gb one isn't out in the UK (yet).

All games are region free. I'll recommend Uncharted as a game to get (though I've not played the demo).

If I'm being honest, if more people didn't ignore the 'fanboy comments', people would learn a lot more. A lot of what's continually pointed out about the PS3 isn't negative towards it because it's a PS3, it's truthful (although I admit, some people are stupid about it, but of course others make up rubbish on the other side of the fence as you said).

That is what i said, ignore the "fanboy" comments and you'll be ok, didnt mention to ignore anti PS3 comments how ever banal the point may be. How much "Fact" that people say, is actually currently correct? I can think of many so called facts that are still being bounded about due to some blokes comment on a website 6 months ago or an old interview with a developer that currently do not hold true (and probably never was true). For example the 360 had hardware issues that have been lessened to some degree with the introduction of a new CPU and cooling systems, so saying all 360 will RROD is incorrect now, or that PS3 had no games which again is now a statement with no foundation. If you thought i was trying to tell him to ignore anti PS3 statements then that was not my intention, and after re reading my post i cannot see that is what i implied, sorry if you thought that is what i was doing. :)

No, I never thought you were. However it was written in such a way that it seemed you were glossing over some of the very obvious negatives (which a lot of people have been doing in PS3 threads lately), in which people only end up kidding themselves.

The PS3 is a good console at the moment, but it should be better. I still feel like it was released a year too late for its technology, but a year too early for what it offers software wise.
I was hoping for more unity with the PS3's Operating System in update 2.0 (as I think everyone was), however, 12 months after launch not having stuff that should have been there from day 1 is disappointing.
I still use my PS3 pretty much every day though, however, for me, it makes a far better media machine than it does a games machine.

Anyway, I'm tired and waffling and I'm no doubt off-topic, so I apologise, been a long day (I graduated! Full gown and ceremony \0/.)

Nice one mate, it's a great console, truth be known it has had a rocky start, but right now its a great time to own one!

Deffinately try and get the 60gb if you can, if only for the backwards compatability. (Dont worry too much about the size of the HDD, it can be replaced very very easily.)

All games up to now have been region free, there was some speculation that the Stranglehold Collectors Edition would be region locked because it comes with the movie Hard Boiled on the same disc, however Midway decided to not go down this route.

Highly recommend you give msmalls FAQ a read, he put a great deal of effort into it :)

PS3 FAQ

Once you've got it and your all set-up online you will have to join us for some gaming action :)

Thanks for the response guys :) And the linkage. Had seen the ps3 bundle thread earlier, but had missed the FAQ one. Great job on it btw msmalls. Very well done :D

I think i'm going to go for the UK version. It's a 100 pounds more expensive, but that doesn't count the free games you get with it. Plus, all my ps2 games are PAL and if I buy Blu-Ray movies later, I want them to be played easily etc.

Just one more question though. Wasn't planning to ask it, but you guys seem to know what you're on about :p You mentioned some of the issues that do exist with the PS3. Anything especially significant I should know about before going and buying it? Did see the bit about load times etc. in ninja gadien. Is that true just for that, or are most PS3 games suffering from scene load time issues?

Main reason for me getting one, is because lot of the games i'm looking forward to are exclusives for it. Namely, MGS4, God Of War III, heavenly sword, and I read somewhere, tekken and ninja gadien sigma (suprised by those 2 if that site was true though)

Nokkunwud, congrats on graduating :D

Thanks again guys :) And Inoshishi, definitely join you guys for online action once I figure out how to connect the damn thing online :P Have to go and buy a router I think :(

The main problem is that other than DiRT, all the ports look and run better on the Xbox360, some considerably so such as the brilliant 'The Darkness' or 'GRAW2', but it's quite consistent and apparently isn't changing any time soon with Half Life 2: The Orange Box apparently really poor for frame-rates especially on the water-boat sections (though Portal is fine).

The exclusives currently out are very average at the moment, with the highlights being MotorStorm and possibly Ratchet & Clank (though I thought that was a let down - though I haven't played any more than an hour of it). Tekken is an exclusive, but it's Tekken5 that's on the PSP and Ninja Gaiden Sigma is just Ninja Gaiden Black from the Xbox. Ninja Gaiden is actually an Xbox360 exclusive, so Ninja Gaiden 2 will only be seen on the Xbox360.

God of War 3 is the one that excites me most, though I wouldn't expect to see that for at least another 12 months, I'd think the same for Metal Gear Solid 4 too. The exclusive I'm most excited about is Uncharted: Drakes Fortune, which you've not mentioned, so you should look at that.

I love my PS3 as a media device as I regularly play DVD's and Blu-Rays on it, but as a games device, for me at least owning an Xbox360, is a big let down so far, but in 12-18 months it should have it's issues sorted with the ports and it should have a strong list of exclusive games out. That's when it should be exciting to be a PS3 owner and I'm looking forward to that, but for now it's my DVD player.

If you get a wireless router it will be really easy. I've found the PS3 effortless to get onto wireless networks.

What I was refering to with "A Rocky Start" was that the PS3 had very slow sales to start with (which has now really picked up and is selling very well indeed). Also there was a lack of games to begin with, but that happens with all consoles when they first arrive on the scene, thankfully that is no longer the case, theres at least 10 Must Play titles now and plenty of others to get your teeth stuck into, and plenty more coming out each week.

There have also been a lot of dodgy ports (mainly from EA) so I tend to avoid anything with an EA logo on it. (Not that they bring out anything worth playing anyway), The Darkness is worth a mention, that is a terrible port compared to the 360 version, BUT... I played it all the way through (think I got 100% completion) and loved every minute of it, one of the best SP games I've ever played, so it all depends if a few slowdowns and jagies are going to spoil the game for you, but like I say this seems to have been sorted now, most games such as CoD4\Sega Rally are identical on both systems, and some have the upper hand such as DiRT and I believe Oblivion is slightly better on the PS3 too.

If you want to play Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid etc. etc. you've deffinately opted for the right console :)

Worth bearing in mind if you hate noise 40GB version is a lot quieter than the previous 60/20GB models, it's virtually silent by comparison.

It's a new major revision afterall.

Out of all the PS3 exclusives i would only rate one below average and that Lair, but i have not played it yet so i cannot judge it myself, the people who have got the hang of the controls actually like the game even though its still has it quirks. Heavenly Sword is an excellent if short game, but thats not a problem for a game as enjoyable as this. Ratchet and Clank average? you played it for an hour and you thinks its just an average game, well i suggest you spend a little more time with it as its one of the best looking and most fun games ive played for along time. RFOM i know you have issue with this game regarding the graphics but its a good game with great weapons and the story is pretty good too, the Multi Player rocks 40 player online lag free blasting, something most other console FPS games dont have. Motorstorm is great fun misses have split screen, but with all the new tracks/game modes and cars available its still the best Off road racer IMO, Dirt is good but nowhere near as much fun. NGS is a great game although much like the old xbox version but with new levels extra weapons and now DLC for various other modes is the best version. NG2 will be published by microsoft (if it ever gets a non AO rating lol), but whos to say that a revamped NG2 wont be released by tecmo, developed in the same way sigma was to the PS3?
The multiplat argument is always a bit of a strange one, sure some times the PS3 version doesnt have as much bloom or AA or maybe a frame rate stutter but it plays the same and i dont think ive ever had it spoil my experience. Last gen the PS2 version of multiplats didnt look as good or run as well as the xbox versions in some case, didnt stop that though did it. Now its more common for them to be pretty much the same as each other and likes been said before its down to the exclusives in the end.

Ratchet & Clank looks okay, although incredibly linear and for a lot of the first hour, on rails (literally). It's funny and quirky, but as a platform game it's quite dull. I'm a massive fan of platform games, Jak & Daxter being on of my favourite games around. Short of the humour, R&C really doesn't offer much and it's a million miles from revolutionary, you could infact argue it's not even evolutionary.

I like Resistance in Multiplayer, but in SP it's just dull and soulless. Unoriginal and dull weapons, poor enemies. The story is an interesting take though, however, gameplay is just poor.

Motorstorm is good fun, but as I said when I bought it, it lacks modes and features which should have been in there, only for them to release them later on and charge for it. For me, it's the best of the exclusives though.

Lair I haven't played, however I was vocal from day one saying it would be pants.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma is great, but I played it over half a decade ago on the original Xbox.

The only people clinging on to defending the PS3 constantly are those that only own a PS3. The ones with all the consoles are for the most part just being honest and that's me included. If it comes off as anti-PS3, it's not intended that way. I'm being honest.

What are your thoughts on Warhawk Nokkon? I dismissed the game for about 2 months and havent been able to put it down these past 2 weeks. I have to agree with your post though, but I have to admit things are looking better and taking a step in the much needed direction (ala Drakes Fortune and hopefully Haze) shame it has taken them about 8 months to get up to speed.

Does an ex-360 owner get included in that? :p

I don't like it much at all. It's a poor Battlefield 2 for me, and with the lack of communications or people talking it doesn't seem social. It's most likely a riot on a LAN, but it left me cold online. I've had a few good games, but for the most part it just doesn't do it for me.

For me, Uncharted could be the one, but a consoles exclusives are its Bread and Butter. The Xbox360 and Wii managed to get AAA exclusives out on launch in PGR3 and Zelda (although, in fairness, that was a Gamecube game too), so it's disappointing that the PS3 is still waiting, but I guess they couldn't hold off the release of the console any longer.
