Hi there,

Am considering getting a PS3 to replace my big old downstairs PC which I'm using to play music and browse the net. I've heard that the PS3 can do both of these things but was wondering how easy it is to browse the web.

Can you just plug in a USB mouse and K/B and away you go or is it more complicated?

Also is it better to try and get a rare 60Gb model or is the 40Gb better ? I don't have any PS2 games but the memory card reader could be useful.

Thanks

Yes, it's easy to surf the web with a PS3. Dont expect 100% comaptability with all websites - its gets better with every update though.

Get the 40gb and then spend £5 on a USB mem card adaptor that you just plug into the front of the PS3.

I've got the 40Gb PS3, and the web browsing is sufficient enough as a novelty item. Some websites full functions don't work or "lag" the browser out. However, the PS3 can have Linux installed onto it which would enable you to have full browsing functionality. But the Linux distributions at the moment are not all that reliable on the PS3, so it might be best to wait a while or stick with a cheaper PC. But by all means if your looking for something which is going to improve and can play games etc. The PS3 is a VERY nice buy (no bias here or anything). ;)

Thanks for the replies.

I take it its not possible to buy stuff over the net with the PS3?

Are all memory card compatible or are is there a particular model that I should be looking for?

Am heavily leaning towards this now :) My brother got one for christmas and I couldn't believe how quiet it was. Would be perfect for watching DVDs too !

How easy is it to install linux ?

Thanks

When you say memory card compatible what do you mean? The PS3 has a hard-drive where you store all your save games etc. The 40GB model also only comes with 2 USB ports, although you can buy an adapter for all the memo duo slots and more USB ports etc.

You can "buy" online with the PS3 browser, although i've put off doing it for the moment, as the PC just seems to be easier atm. Not sure if it is more secure:confused:

The machine is VERY quiet, i've been able to have it on all night downloading goodies! Even with a disc playing inside it is still very quiet (a lot quiter than my old X360). It hardly ever gets hot for me either. All in all a good investment if you are looking for a media center!

Sorry i meant are all USB memory card readers compatible or is one model better than the others ?

Think I'll pop into town at lunch and see what offers they've got.

Thanks

My PC has been broke for a few days now, so i've been using the ps3 and a laptop.
I can browse such complicated sites as this forum and watch youtube. But its not ideal for extensive browsing such as looking through dozens of sites for the best bargain :p
But yes you can buy things using the ps3.

I guess the biggest problem is there's no 'new window' button soyou have to find a link in a page that pops up a new window. Also, for soem reason the PS3 runs out of memory really quickly so you can't have a lot of windows open.

Oh, also I believe most keyboards and mice work with the console. Just like Windows XP, I think there's one general driver that is compatible with all keyboard and mice.
