PS3 Laser Died

So.....my nice shiney new PS3 decided to kill itself after one week of life (about 6 hours after obtaining MGS4 aswell)

I say new, however I've only had the console one week, having bought it second hand off for sale board at work. Now I don't have a receipt, however can confirm that the console is less than 6 months old. I'm going to ring sony tomorrow to see about a replacement.

Apparently many people have encountered this disc read error. Anyone had easy success with obtaining a replacement....without a receipt?

Phone up Sony and hopefully they'll do an immediate exchange at your door.

Unfortunately a lot of PS3s in the past few months have been having these problems.

Common problem with PS3's, Sony will have a new one out for you early next week and do a straight swap on the door with their courier - They use parcelline.

My PS3 died out of warranty(4-6 weeks)

Sony honoured the change and had one to my door 5 days later. They had DPD do a swapround at my doorstep.

- You said it's a new one so why can't you get the store to swap it?

Give Sony the serial number of the machine and they will swap it over in a few days.

Strangely I do. The actual PS3 is very quiet but when the fan runs slow it makes a kind of ticking sound.

I have a 60Gb one.

Still nowhere near the numbers of failed 360's though I'd bet.

PS1, PS2 and PS3, never had a problem with any of them, saying that never had a problem with my 360 either, still going strong.

PS1, had no problem
PS2, 3 died
PS3, on my second (first one GPU died)

All sony products with lasers a pretty naff, I've had plenty of sony cd/dvd players fail on me as well.

My PS3 laser died, Phoned Sony, got a new console few days later. Job sorted.

well i gave Sony a rang and they said to do a full system format (2 hours+)

said i would give it a go even though i know damm well it's not gonna fix it. Told them i would ring again later if any probs and they said earliest i could get a new console is Thursday!! *cries*

Why the hell did this have to happen on a friday night when i had just bought MGS4!!!!
