Record-breaking 165,000 PS3s sold at UK launch
18:45, Mar 26th 2007 by Neil Long
New format becomes fastest-selling home console ever over its debut weekend.
ChartTrack has confirmed that 165,000 PS3 units were sold during the console's launch weekend.

The figure is three quarters of the total 220,000 UK launch stock for day one, and makes PS3 second only to PSP in the overall launch weekend sales stakes. The Sony handheld shifted 185,000 in its opening weekend back in September 2005.

PS3’s record-breaking debut for a home console comfortably beats the previous top seller Nintendo Wii, which sold 105,000 after its frantic launch weekend in December last year. Fellow format rival Xbox 360 racked up an estimated 70,000 at launch in December 2005.

The figure also means that Sony has not sold all of its opening weekend stock, something the platform holder claims is part of its overall strategy at retail.

Launch sale figures are always limited by the amount of available consoles. PS3 had more on launch day in Europe therefore better sales. It has less on launch day in Japan and the US therefore fewer sales

good news, i think sony did well for its launch, I didnt even plan on getting a ps3 i was just walking around the metro centre and all the shops had stands saying ps3s in stock so i walked in and got mine from M&S lol.

If the Wii had more stock it would've blew that record away I guess due to the price/novelty. Though I'm happy to see the PS3 broke it after all of the "oh no it didn't sell out within an hour, the console is doomed forever" chatter.

I'm a proud owner after part-ex'ing in my 360 which was built and ran like a bag of spanners.

Good point, i'm surprised at the number anyway.

When I went into town on saturday everywhere had them in stock. The place where I got mine from had 45 in stock.

Lets see what the 360 fanboys say about this :p :D

And that had loads of point because............

Yes, well done Sony for getting the console out and breaking that record, but considering the lack of 360s and Wiis at launch it wasnt exactly difficult to do.

They would probably post an image like this:

If I was head of Sony I would have limited 100,000 for launch weekend then shipped the rest the following weekend, generated abit of demand and media buzz.

Also how many of them where for selling on and will be returned seen 1000s on auction sites not sell.

Lol. The whole 360 vs PS3 is really getting old on here. Cant everyone just get along :p :D

But anyhoo

Good job Sony. :) Good to see a half decent launch with plenty of consoles for everyone that wants (or can afford) one

Just stop analysing launch figures.. it's daft, and can only lead to arguments...

My only comment would be the people/press praising Sony for the amount of Stock allocation..

On one hand I agree more stock is a good thing, but on the other hand, they shafted Europe by delaying for nearly 6 months and gave us less hardware (PS2 EE)...

Like all consoles, lets just see how it pans out over the coming months... not in a negative way, but at least when we spout figures they may actually mean something..
