Well, for starters, the whole point of Linux is that it's open source, which means it's free.

wasn't pre-installed on my ps3 (that was a few months ago) so I'd expect to download & install it, maybe changed for newer consoles?

yer i guess i need to d/l is it worth puting on?

can i back up my game saves to sdcard or usb hd ?

you need to downlaod it and burn it to dvd.

you also need to do this before installing http://www.playstation.com/ps3-openplatform/manual.html

but seriously, just dont bother. im not being funny but if you dont know that linux, being open source, is supposed to be free, then you'll have no idea how to use it, install anything or keep it up to date. that and the fact that its practically useless on the ps3 right now anyway (lots of things not supported, extremely slow ect) means it really is a waste of your time. i mean, what are you going to do with it?

i am running eeebuntu on my eeepc and have arch on desktop. I just like messing about with hardware , bit of a geek really

to be fair there is a pay for version on that site too, though I would always go for the free version unless I was specifically paying for support or some proprietary software.

I haven't tried linux on my ps3 yet as I have too much data to back up but will probably do it with a bigger hard-drive when I get one.

Being a bit of a linux fan I would probably install it and mess about with it regardless of performance, the e17 desktop is quite nice too

I'm using Yellow Dog 6 on my PS3 as we speak and its really not as bad as made out. Once you install the third party RPM files, which are basically pre-complied software packages, you can literally install a huge library of things at the click of a button. No need to be downloading files etc and the software manager will even find the most recent updates, its a lot more efficient than windows! With YDL 6 everything seemed to work out of the box as well, wifi worked straight away, and messenger and Firefox are included as standard. Been playing some old skool games lately like Duke Nukem 3D and Beats of Rage, apparently you can also get PS3 pads working with Linux games aswell, but haven't tried that yet.

On the downside the PS3 hasn't got a great deal of ram which means it can get sluggish at times, like having VLC, a torrent client, messenger and Firefox open will be pretty slow. But its fine if you're playing some old skool games on there own or browsing etc. Also YDL 6.0 doesn't support NTFS drives which is pain as I cant use my external hard drive, though version 5.01 does for some reason, but apparently wifi isn't as supported.

I was a complete Linux noob until i installed Yellow Dog and after a few trials and errors and reading a lot of stuff on this forum http://www.yellowdog-board.com/viewforum.php?f=19, I feel a lot more confident in it and find myself coding in the terminal a lot more than I thought as its simply a lot more efficient.
