I just found out about this and it amazes me how easy it works

I can play normal xvid and x264 content nicely, but just tried a DVD ISO file and it worked but was skipping every 5 seconds or so, same with 720p and 1080p content.

Is it possible to play this stuff over network? I haven't got a clue how a network works, is it your your internet download speed or doesn't this have anything to do with a network?

Just that i should be 12MB down and 1MB up but Sky are doing them silly little tests they do so im only at 3MB down and 600kb up at moment. So will this effect video buffer? or as asked before does have nothing to do with a network?

Hope you lot get what im on about, because to be fair i dont :p

Streaming video from your PC to PS3 won't use your internet connection. Are you using wi-fi though (for either the PC or PS3)? In my experience that can create issues, even when you've got a decent signal.

Yeah everything is wifi, Should i try connecting through a Ethernet wire? ( well the yellow cable thing)

Im connecting from my MBP.

Thanks

The stuttering is something I suffered via wifi as the streaming of 720/1080 along with DTS, etc... is quite bandwidth hungry. I was unable to use an ethernet cable due to the locations of my PC/PS3 so I opted for the HomePlug route instead. This solved my issues and I can now stream everything flawlessly so using an ethernet cable should have the same effect for you.

while it will be better using a ethernet cable i've never had an issue streaming 720p stuff via wireless to my ps3. (never bothered trying 1080 as my tv doesn't support it anyway)

hmmm im still struggling to get them working. My mbp is about 5ft away from my ps3 so wifi connection should be excellent.

Just plugged in the Ethernet cable in and its still doing the same, do i need to turn off wifi or something? As i dont know even if the Ethernet cable is on, i don't knoq how to tell lol

Have you configured the PS3 to use the wired connection? I had to set my network connection up again as it was trying to use the wireless connection initially.

Going back to some other comments, most 720p was fine but the odd film like Up would struggle when there was lots of action going on.

If the green light is still on at the front (bottom-left, next to the hard-drive light), it's still using wi-fi. You have to go into Network Settings and change it to wired connection.

You will probably find that wifi is a higher priororty connection than the network card (look under networking on your MBP). Just move it down the list below ethernet and you should be fine, otherwise it will try and use wifi first, hence the stuttering. Distance will make little difference with regard to wifi streaming HD content. These devices run nowhere near as fast as they claim. You may just manage it on a wireless 'n' connection, but wireless 'g' which claims 54Mbs is lucky to achieve 20Mbs in the real world and is often considerably slower. 720p needs a stable 5Mbs minimum and ideally 7Mbs depending on encoding, 1080p needs 2.5x that so close to 20Mbs (stable).

I use an old G4 as a server streaming via CAT5e (an ancient technology so I am informed) using a 24 port 3Com 10/100 Switch and it streams flawlessly. In fact I can stream a movie to my Xbox and Apple TV at the same time with no stuttering at all.

My wifi connection for the PC and PS3 averages between 85-95% signal. Stuttering happens even if I bump down the transcode settings. Most of my vids are in SD or 720p.
Any ideas?

Thats odd as my ps3 was downloading off my pc at 50 mb/s via wireless and i only have a wireless g router

Interesting as 54Mbs is the speed quoted without error correction, it is actually physically impossible for these devices to actually achieve these transfer rates, unless error correction is disabled.

Thanks guys for replies.

I see what i was doing wrong yesterday, i was plugging my ps3 straight into my mbp with the ethernet cable... guessing you need to plug both the mbp and ps3 into the router?

If so ill just leave it, i can't stand wires at all. could have lived with it if it was ps3 straight into mbp as i could hide the wire.

Thanks anyway.
