Hi all,

have looked in quite a few places but found nothing to confirm my question.

at the moment I have an Xbox 1 chipped running XBMC, which I use to stream media from my pc.

Im looking at buying a PS3 but would like to do the same, is this possible on the PS3?

cheers

Yes but it wont support anything the number of file formats that XMBC supports.

You'll need some software called TVersity, that encodes things like DiVX, Xvid, & WMV on the fly so your PS3 can recognise them.

I understand that XviD support is coming in the next firmware update but you can bet your mortgage that there will be some kind of DRM requirement.

Oh and TVersity is free by the way:D

Yes, but TVersity takes some time to get it setup properly.

I use it to stream (transcode) DIVX content from the PC to the PS3 and it can also convert and copy the file to the PS3 harddisk.

Know of any decent guides, I have never actually got the transcoding working when I tried initially. Just want to try to see if it can work, just to see which types of files my machine would be able to transcode in realtime or faster speeds.

Nero Media home (comes with Nero Burning) can also steam to the PS3 and I find it easier to use than TVersity.

One option for the PS3 is to pop linux on it for all your media needs, and a few emulators if that's you bag.

It will be interesting to see if the tv decoder addon for *** PS3 will be supported by Myth TV, which in turn gets cell support, as that would probably make the PS3 an awesome media centre.

I just used the FAQs on their site and streaming a Top Gear divx works fine, what part does not work for you?

I installed the newest Winamp on my PC, and it came with something called Winamp Remote.

I installed it.

Barely any set up required at all, just pointed it at my DivX folders.

The PS3 found a Winamp Orb server (or something similar)

Played my DivXs no problem.

I'm going to leave the whole streaming thing for now though, until the DivX update happens on the PS3, and see how that works.

V1N.

I followed http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=75081 and it worked fine.

The delay in starting is initial caching/transcoding I believe.

As someone else said, it's worth spending time playing with the settings to get optimal results.

yeah, I've done some playing around, and i've ended up with a bit of a hybrid. but it works much nicer.

Basically, I'm using the Winamp/Orb Remote software, But i've changed the Decoder within from the winamp one, To FFDshow(Which we all know and love) Now although theres still a bit of a loading period. The result is perfect decoded playback on my 360.

well happy!!

only problem ive found with diversity was getting it to transcode properly

ive got a 3ghz core 2 duo

but it couldnt encode the video and audio at the same speed, video was slightly sped up, and the audio even more so it soounded like everbody was a hamster

may have to try again with it though, as apart from that it worked fine when it didnt transcode.

Hopefully I may be in a position to help having just bought a PS3 to add to my collection

TVersity - At first I could not get this to work, or at least stream so I could watch it as clear as the 360. I have a 32" LCD and it looked rubbish. Friend said to set it to 720x576. That sorted it. Then tried a few files and some came back as corrupted. Make sure you have transcoding to auto detect

Nero home - This worked well on first go, but I hate the time it takes to update on the PS3. Again had some files saying they are corrupt but found that on this one changing it from auto detect to MPEG 1 sorted it and it streams everything

Currently I have gone back to TVersity as it lets to set you own folder views. Nero may do this but haven't worked out how yet.

I've tried using Nero MediaHome for streaming my music to PS3 but it just doesn't pick anything up...:(

So what files is it possible to stream to the PS3? What can you do with ISO's etc? Possible to mount them and then stream from there or am I dreaming and it's only possible to play avi files? Would any of this be possible with a Network drive?
