My PS3 is working on a wireless home network (sky / sagem adsl wireless router), I'm thinking of adding a NAS device.

With say an icybox wired to the router will the PS3 be able to share it over a wireless network?

So it'd want to be one of these :

rather than one of these?

and with streaming software / any recomendations?

You'll need one with a UPnP Media Server on it I believe.

I'm not entirely sure with these to be honest, I did a bit of research into them but have decided to save up and build an actual server to suit my needs.

As people have said, any NAS with media server capabilities should work. Alternatively you could use a basic NAS and then a third party media server such as Tvsersity can be run on your PC to share the media, that kinda nullifies the whole point of a NAS however :/

Alternatively you could buy a big USB harddrive, format it to fat32 and then it'll work just fine with the PS3.

This would be the MUCH easier option, I was just thinking that maybe NAS would be more useful for other PC's & laptops / although i could also just plug it into these too when needed ;)

Tell you what is quite good for that purpose:

Basically i have the power supply and USB hooked up next to my PS3 permanently, the above enclosure lets you slot the external harddrive into one of the DVD drive bays in your PC case without the need for cables; it connects to one of the internal sata and power ports just like a internal harddrive. This lets you effortlessly whip the drive out of your computer and plug it straight into the PS3 without needing to worry about plugging cables in etc.

Is it possible to format to FAT32 without the 4GB limit on file size? I've not really concidered this an option so far for me. :)

[EDIT] Sorry i misread your post, no sadly FAT32 is limited to 4gig files max. I thought you meant the 4gig partition space that windows limits fat32 to.

MKV2VOB will split your video files into 4gig chunks if that's of any use though.

Can already do that with DVDShrink. Just concidering my options, at the moment really though. Still leaning toward a full server, because I'll get more use out of it. :)

You need a NAS that specifically supports the DNLA protocol. This will broadcast the appropriate information for the PS3 to see your media files.

I use a D-Link DNS-323 to do this (don't think you can buy them anymore).

Great solution as anything on my network can stream stuff from it (PS3, 360, Macbook, Windows Laptop etc.) wirelessly or wired. If you just want something only for PS3 a NAS is overkill tbh.

FAT32 based disk is a limited solution imo as you are limited to 4GB files (as someone mentioned). These home NAS solutions tend to use EXT2 or EXT3 filesystems, predominantly, which let you have much larger files (which can also be copied form NAS to PS3).

I have a QNAP 209 which is great for this - although my tags are a mess so its not as tidy as it should be hahaha

Ive also just invested in a popcorn hour a110 to store dvd/br rips because its capable of bitstreaming hd audio into my onkyo amp
