PS3 noob - 2407WFP display issue

Erm a keyboard or mouse is an input device, a monitor is an output, just like a printer. The signal outputs from the PS3 to the monitor ;):p

Unfortunately no ones got a PS3 - all Wii addicts :(

Anyway, unless a new cable sorts it, it does sound like your monitor is faulty. Dell can be quite good at sorting these things, even if you're not sure of the warranty, but you'd need to try and get through to one of their UK call centers who are more willing to please.
 
Naah sorry if I came over 'smart' Herminator, appreciate yours and other peoples comments in assisting me with this.

Trying to isolate it from the easiest and simplest to try before I have a Dell day - I have just realised that I do have a HDMI upscaling DVD recorder, but Ill try that tomorrow as it involves removing a load of cables :p...

I've not had a problem running my PS3 on my 2407 WFP. Make sure that you are not trying to use it at 1080i as I think the Dell doesn't like that.

Does it work at 1080p?

It just gave the message along the lines that I was running too high a resolution or not a supported one and to change back to 1920 x 1200 @ 60Hz.

Sorry cant remember the monitor message that well :p

That appeared for both 1080i and 1080p

OK guys - I think Ive gotten down to the bottom of it and as you said it seems the monitor doesnt support HDCP so the chip must be broken.

I tried to do as Type_R said and try connecting it a few times while resetting the PS3 as per Streetahs instructions but just was getting the same effects - must have tried at least 4 times...

I then got the HDMI DVD recorder up here and it worked first time on the same DVI-HDMI cable without any issue and let me play a DVD. Both 1:1 and Fill worked (so its definitely a A04).

Guess a call to Dell on Monday to hopefully clear this up

hey I had a problem with mine (2407 and hdmi to DVI)

the problem turned out to be the cable...... theres different types of dvi on the bay..... the pins were diferent on mine.....

so I got another cable. and it worked fine...... the settings were set to automatic with all the display options ticked.....

noticed one problem tho with Rock Band last night :

I couldnt watch DVD on my HD TV while the settings were on automatic - I had to select just 1080p.... manual....

then I bought Rock Band and the screen was green when I used it on the dell!

exit game - back to menu - and select automatic again - game working fine !

So try turning off Auto first..... then try another cable.... check out the pins.

Its a DVI-D to HDMI - dno why a DVI-I cable would help though?!? (all pins on the DVI connector)

Just on the phone to Dell and pointed them to this thread - hopefully Ill get this fixed so I can enjoy the PS3 in HD!!!

Composite really sucks and I refuse to ruin the PS3 experience much longer :p...

P.S. It wasnt the cable in the end as I got it connected to a HDMI DVD Recorder fine without an issue.

Must be the HDCP chip or some sort of handshaking issue...

OMFG I/Dell got it working!!! Bloody hell, everytime Ive had an issue, Dell really have sorted me out - nearly as good as Logitech in my books!!!

As Type_R said I guess after a while it just worked - dont think I did anything different but in case anyone has has these issues Ill detail the steps I just did:

  • Switched off monitor. It was connected to PC via DVI-D as normal. PS3 was in standby mode
  • Removed PC DVI-D cable and replaced with the DVI end of the HDMI-DVI cable I already had.
  • Switched off PS3 from back
  • Removed old PS3 AV cable and put in the HDMI end of the HDMI-DVI cable
  • Switched on PS3 from back so it ws in standby mode
  • Switched on 2407WFP from front so it was on DVI-I (mode 2) it went to standby as I attempted to go into the monitors image modes menu
  • Switched on PS3 from front and held it down until it made a beep
  • Went back to monitor menu and changed the image mode from 'desktop' to 'gaming'
  • By the time I did this I noticed the PS3 was on and was on the detecting HDMI cable screen - RESULT!!!
  • Automatically detected 1080p without issue and tested
  • Switched audio to non-HDMI
Ive just saved £750 as I had resigned myself to havingf to buy a new HDTV - cant see this monitor being weak for gaming or BD movies :). Do I need to worry about thw whole 100Hz 24p thing?!?

Anyone know of a DVI splitter so I can swop between PC and PS3? Will that cause any further issues?!?

That's excellent news. On the PC front i would actually recommend just using VGA, i do and it looks exactly the same as DVI to me tbh.
 
Yeah its actually something to do with the display mode, i believe gaming mode only supports hdcp or something silly like that. I also use hdmi->dvi on a 2407 a04.
 
Gaming mode does some wierd things when Im looking at the desktop so had to put it back to desktop mode (moving between pages meant the brightness kept going darker or lighter :confused: )

Afraid I need a DVI splitter/switch as Im already using the VGA for my second PC/server or a laptop...
