PS3 not reading dicsc

as above.

ps3 not reading any discs anymore so i think the laser has died.

is the 80gig phat version.

seeing as most places are charging £90=£130 to fix it. im going to do it myself.

should i replace the whole drive bay or just the laser?

any guides

most likely only the laser, but these are refurbished parts (although advertised as new by many - Sony stopped production in 2008

) - if you get the whole drive you will still need to use the current mainboard for the DriveBay since it's paired with your console's mainboard

here's a "how to" video, it's fairly straightforward

they seem to be a temp fix, since it's a faulty design from the start. how long it will last is debatable. but you could be doing this several times a year. the fact that they only offer very limited warranty says it all to me.

you can also sell your current on dodgebay as faulty for about £50 to lessen the price of new w/ larger hard drive, game and 1yr warranty. it may be more cost effective than constant tinkering w/ current if that even fixes it - the laser isn't the only problem that can happen

i was in similar situation and decided to buy a new one and cut my losses.

My original 60GB one started doing this before xmas, it was touch and go when I put a disk in but just got worse and worse.

I just bought a new 120gb slim

Just fixed mine by replacing the laser tray assembly only for it to work for a total of 15mins... Did an firmware update and it's nailed again with no disc read

I was going to fix mine, but I was worried it would just break again - like yours did!

Seems like you might have to bite the bullet and get a new one

Problem is getting a new laser and not some Chinese knock off or a reconditioned one, seems they stopped making some of the lasers over 2 years ago. Gonna get a 320slim now I think and sell my old phat as faulty on a popular auction site - seem to go for around £70 so it makes a new one a little easier to swallow

The other thing to think of is the ylod issue, bit of a ticking time bomb on some of the older models it seems, could get the drive working only for it to ylod a week later :/

contact sony direct and sent it back to factory would be the best choice

they charge £120-150, and it's only a 3 months warranty, if it ylods or laser gives in 91 days then you are out of luck

a new one will cost about 220, sell the old one and it's about the same since you get a free game and larger hard drive than a phat - and most importanly peace of mind at least for a year with new warranty.

also the slims seem less prone to breakdown than the phats, at least that is my perception but i could be wrong
