PS3 over DVI. Who uses it?

As title.

Anyone running their PS3 through DVI on their monitor using HDMI to DVI cable?

Whats it like?

Can I just use any old HDMI to DVI cable?

Going to be on my new montior.

It won't work! Whoever Alex Rose is, in his review, he states there is no HDCP.

I got a HDMI to DVI for my mates PS3 a few months back. It lools just the same as mine going straight into HDMI. Not sure about the HDCP on this though as he doesnt play Blu-ray movies on his.

Worked fine for me when I did it into my 2405. I think you'll need a monitor that supports HDCP though, not sure if that one does.

Only want to play games, dont want to play blu-ray movies or anything.

HDCP support shouldnt matter should it, 'cos when you use your PS3 through component or what ever, that obviously doesnt support HDCP so should be the same for DVI...

Using your HDMI to DVI converter needs HDCP and judging by the specs that are given on the OCUK website it does not list you with a component connector. You have a few options and unfortunately are quite costly. The best method is to buy a component to vga converter but can be quite costly and have varying methods of success. Have a google about.

A mate of mine has an older HDTV, Plasma, but he bought it before HDMI and HDCP.

He tried his PS3 via DVI, and it supports 576p and that's it!
(Well, probably 480p as well)

no HD res AT ALL.

He uses component to get 720p.

True, HDCP is only required for BD films, and as your are not interested in playing BD films then it shouldn't be a problem. Games will work fine without HDCP, although ive never tried it myself, sure others on here have if not search the PS3 forums.

It doesn't matter if he doesn't want to watch films, it won't work. You won't get any HD resolutions unless your monitor is HDCP compliant.

That's the best you can get with DVI without HDCP.

That's correct. Best off either buying a monitor that supports HDCP, getting an HDTV or getting one of those fancy pants switch box things.

this is correct

unless you've got HDCP you wont be getting hi def resolutions. its worth noting that you even get the "snow" when the HDCP handshakes when you start your PS3 up, not just when you play blurays.

If you don't have a hdcp compliant display the console won't output anything through hdmi because it cannot create a secure connection to the device, regardless of whether it's a game or film the device must always encrypt the hdmi output, the lower resolution (960x540) only applies to movies with the ICT being outputted through analogue.

If my benq fp2401w is anything to go by, full rgb mode didnt seem to be available through dvi, but works fine over hdmi. Over dvi this led to blacks often looking like greys.
