PS3 Release & 360 price drop

I can defiantely see Microsoft doing something to try and take the spot light off the PS3 on release day, and a price drop would be the most logical one.

There was mention of Halo 3 going to be released on PS3's release date but thats now been scrubbed as far as im aware.

Maybe the new 360 camera or the HD-DVD drive will be released during this time but my money is on a price drop.

I think there will be a price drop around release date of the PS3 but I can't see Halo 3 coming with it.

I know they previewed Halo 3 at E3 but I didn't think it was that far along it was due for release this year, maybe 1st quarter 2007?

I don't think MS need to drop the price this side of xmas because lets be realistic, do you think there will actually be sufficient stock of the PS3 to meet demand at xmas.. I severely doubt it, in which case MS will get a lot of sales off of the back of that alone.

In that you're saying PS3 will sell so much that it will start to run out of stock...I find that highly impossible unless they bring like 400 consoles in the UK only...not many people will pay £424 for a console. Even if the 360's price remained the same, people would purchase a 360 and Wii, it's more economical.

Must admit, I thought the PS3 would sell for any amount, but a guy in the office who is a real sony fan boy and swore blind he wouldnt buy a 360 has said he's not bothering with the PS3 at launch and will only be getting a wii now.

I bet there are still shortages though - its inevitable being so close to xmas.

tbh i think we should elect one member of ocuk to go to japan on release buy loads of them, bring them back and split the profits, there will be none in the uk till march imo

No I wasn't implying that. But I do belive the PS3 will sell at the launch price and likely be in short demand as well, but I doubt Sony will have significant ammounts of stock available so maybe it makes sense for them to put a high price tag on it to cream off a profit from the die hard fans before lowering the price when significant stock arrives.

Pay for my flight...first class that is:p and i dont mind picking up a shedload to bring back here to sell:D.

What everyone seems to have forgotten is the average price of the 360 on fleabay last Xmas, it was well in excess of £600, with some going for more than £1k.

That shows that people will pay top dollar for a console.

Now I do not know how many consoles changed hands via auctions (or how many empty boxes for that matter) but it was quite a lot.

I think the PS3 will sell out. I also think that a lot of 360s and Wiis will be sold in the same period. As many, I could not say.

I was planning on a trip some time in December...but the prices for the PS3 will be quite high regardless of where you are.

I am thinking that this "could" be a marketing ploy.
Everyone feels that £400+ is too much, however if Sony announce in September or similar that it is "only" going to be £350 or so it might stimulate demand as people "feel" that they have a good deal.

A bit like when the Govt suggest that they are going to increase taxes by 10% and we all feel relieved that they only went up by 5%.

Sony have a very long time left to set the shop price.

It is a lot higher than anything in the last decade though.

LOL - Have you checked out PS3 on that good 'ol auction site?

People are already trying to sell their pre-orders for well over £1000.

If people really do go for these offers, then perhaps they do deserve to get shafted, because you shouldn't have that much money with that little sense!

This was last discussed back in May and it seemed pretty split on whether there will be a price drop for the 360 around the launch of the PS3, has anyones opinions changed since then?

Do you think we will see a drop in price to further damage sales of the PS??

Problem is to some people, cost = how good it is.

£400 console with a lot of marketing hype around it vs one that's been out over a year at half the price? They're going to be thinking why is this console so cheap? It must be rubbish! and walk out with a PS3.

Do you go into a shop and buy the most expensive thing you can find regardless of whether it is actually any better than cheaper alternatives?

My god, you must be a salesmans wet dream :p

A lot of people have exactly the same frame of mind.

Everyone will assume the PS3 is better, simply due to the fact it is the latest console*.

*and technically it's superior, but let's not get into that.

Actually thinking about it they will also have to adjust their price when the Wii comes out as that will be cheaper than the 360. So Sony will be hit by M$ knocking their price down twice in a short period of time.
Microsoft made it clear they weren't competing with Wii, at e3 Microsoft stated that instead of buying a Sony Playstation 3 you should buy a Microsoft Xbox360 and a Nintendo Wii.

I personaly think the price for the PS3 is quite reasonable. Yes, the 360 is cheaper and without going into technical details, the PS3 looks like it is more powerful and has more gadgets etc.

If the buying public want a PS3 they will get one. Regardless of the price. I for one will get one because I think the console will carry some good titles and also to try out the new BR drive and see how that does.
