What a day for it to go wrong with 7 games to play!

Has been running fine with no problems what so ever and no flashing lights or anything etc...........

How ever all of a sudden today been getting some lock ups and screen artifacts etc....

Is it worth taking apart, cleaning, re doing h/s with Artic Silver and putting in over for a temp reflow job or is there some hard ware damage?

Be handy if anyone else has experianced this as googling shows up various different answers for a screen artifact problem.

Some say the damage is done to the gfx chip, others say its the hard drive and others say its needs reballing but i have no idea who does this or if its worth it on a old one like this.

Be good if i could get it going tomorrow:)

cheers and happy xmas

It'll be the graphics chip (RSX).

A reflow or reball of this chip will solve it. Changing the thermal compound will do nothing for you, unless of course it is done after the chip repair.

Lead free solder doesn't melt until 217c. I'd say protect all other components with foil and stick it in at 230c for 20 minutes.

If your temperature is too low it will still work, but only last a week.

ah righht i did 200 degrees at 15 mins.........

Ill try what you said then but dont know if i could go 20 mins without bricking myself!
